10 things to do while waiting for your flight at Hong Kong Airport

Hong Kong International Airport is one of the world's busiest and most modern airports, and luckily that means it offers plenty to do for travellers waiting for their flight or connecting flight.

Whether you're looking for a place to get some rest, some food or the most efficient way to sneaking out to the city, this guide highlights all the things you can do while killing time at Hong Kong Airport.

1. Relax in the Plaza Premium Lounge

Where is it? There are three to choose from: 1) Near Gate 1 in Terminal 1 departures, 2) Near Gate 60 in Terminal 1 departures, and 3) Near Gate 35 in Terminal 1 departures

Perfect for those looking to relax before a flight or settle in whlie waiting for a connection, the Premium Lounges in Hong Kong offer entry options ranging from three to six hours.

2. Visit the Aviation Discovery Centre

Where is it?: 6th floor, Terminal 2

The Aviation Discovery Centre provides an engaging and instructive aviation experience. Along with enjoying flying simulations, you may learn about the history of aviation. The Aviation Discovery Centre displays the development of Hong Kong's aviation sector in addition to other related subjects.

The SkyDeck is another notable feature with themed displays and visual representations, offering a breathtaking perspective of Chek Lap Kok Island. In the flight simulator, one can also have an exhilarating experience while seated as the pilot.

3. Take a sculpture tour

Where is it? Terminal 2, 6th floor

If you're an art buff, then take a self-guided walking tour of the travel-themed sculptures scattered around Terminal 2's sixth floor. The whimsical designs are created by some of Hong Kong's best artists, and there's 19 of them in total.

4. Explore SkyCity

Where is it? Terminal 2

SkyCity at Hong Kong airport transit is a commercial complex located adjacent to the airport terminals. SkyCity offers a variety of services, shopping, dining, and entertainment options. As mentioned earlier, SkyCity is home to a range of shops, including both international and local brands. You can explore fashion, electronics, and other retail outlets.

SkyCity is home to a large number of eateries offering a wide range of cuisines. You're sure to find something to suit your taste, whether you're seeking a sit-down meal or a quick snack while waiting for your next flight.

5. Dine on local food

Where is it? Level 6 and 7 food court, Terminal 1

Hong Kong is well known for its mouth-watering cuisine, and you don't even have to leave the airport to get a taste of it. Here, you'll find a diverse range of dining options, including several establishments that serve local Hong Kong cuisine, from local cuisine to international favourites.

Use this time to try something new or enjoy a leisurely meal, such as DimDimSum Dim Sum Specialty Store, Tai Hing Roast, Wontonmeen, Cathay Pacific Lounge Noodle Bar, Maxim's Jade Garden, Asia Treasures, Tsui Wah Restaurant, Yankee Pier, and many more.

7. Visit the Open Air Terrace

Where is it? Skyhall

If you want to catch some fresh air, climb up to level 7 East Hall, departures, and step out to the Sky Garden, an open-air patio with plant boxes and metallic silhouette art pieces such as bauhinia, goldfish, birds, butterflies, and leaves that liven up the atmosphere.

8. Visit Buzz Zones

Where is it? Terminal 1 near Gates 31, 41, and 62 on Departures level 6

The location includes interactive games and playground equipment where you and your children can have fun. Allow children to burn off some energy at the Wonder Eggshell play area in the East Hall on departure level 6. The facility is open to children ages 6 to 12 and features an interactive gigantic eggshell construction where they can climb, slide, and explore various curving net tunnels. In addition, there are bird-themed digital games throughout the neighbourhood.

9. Take a city tour

Where is it? Hong Kong City

If you have an extended layover, consider taking a short tour of Hong Kong -- you may even qualify for one free of charge!

If you have a stopover that's seven hours or longer and are able to enter Hong Kong (with your passport or a valid visa), then you can register for a free tour with Hong Kong Airport up to three months' prior to your trip. The tour will take you to some of Hong Kong's most iconic spots and offer panoramic views of the city's iconic skyline.

10. Get a hotel

Where are they? Within a few kilometres of Hong Kong airport

If you have an overnight stopover, or a long enough one that you think a nap could fill, then consider booking into an airport hotel.

Not keen on a sleep? They could be worth it just for somewhere to put your bags, have a swim, take a shower and get something to eat that isn't airport food.
