Your France adventure might begin with baguettes under the Eiffel Tower – but there’s far more beyond the world-famous monument. Wander through Montmartre to the steps of Sacré-Cœur, then linger by the Seine or in the Louvre’s cool galleries. Head south to Provence, where Cézanne once painted among lavender fields, or continue to Bordeaux for tastings in Saint-Émilion’s stone cellar wineries. By the time you reach the Riviera, beach clubs in Nice and Cannes swap coffees for chilled rosé. From city cafés to vineyard roads, France turns the everyday into a little La Vie en Rose.
There’s just one direct flight from Australia to France right now, with Qantas linking Perth to Paris a few times a week. From the east coast, it’s an easy one-stop trip through hubs like Dubai, Doha, or Singapore before landing at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).
Approximate flight times from Australia to Paris:
From coast to croissant, it’s a long haul. But once you’re stepping out under the Eiffel Tower, it’s all worth it.
Not keen on Paris? While it will have the most availability flight-wise, there are also international flights to other cities, including Bordeaux, Nice and Marseille, with major carriers.
Qantas now operates the only direct flights from Australia to France, connecting Perth to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) on its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Meals, drinks, checked baggage and Qantas Points are all included – just settle in for the 17-hour hop to Europe.
From other Aussie cities, there’s no nonstop option yet, but plenty of smooth one-stop routes through hubs like Singapore, Doha, Dubai and Hong Kong. Here’s who to look out for:
Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) (also known as Roissy) sits about 25 kilometres north of central Paris. It’s the main international gateway to France and one of Europe’s busiest hubs.
The RER B train runs straight from CDG into Paris Gare du Nord in around 35 minutes, while the TGV station beneath Terminal 2 connects you directly to cities like Lyon, Lille and Bordeaux. The Roissybus runs to Opéra in the city centre, and the Magic Shuttle links the airport to Disneyland Paris.
Taxis and rideshares like Bolt and Uber wait outside each terminal, with fixed fares to central Paris (€55 or around AU$100 from the Left Bank, €50 or around AU$90 from the Right). If you’re driving, CDG sits right off the A1 motorway, with long- and short-term parking plus free shuttles between terminals. All major car hire desks (like Avis, Europcar and Hertz) are in Arrivals, making it easy to hit the road toward Normandy, Champagne or the Loire Valley once you land.
The cheapest time to fly to France from Australia is usually between February and March, just before Europe’s spring season. You’ll find lower airfares and fewer crowds across Paris, Nice, Lyon and Bordeaux, making it a great time for sightseeing, wine tours, and quiet cups of chocolat chaud at French cafés. Airfares peak from June to August during France’s summer holidays and again in December for Christmas markets and Alps ski trips. Aussies can visit France and the rest of the Schengen Zone visa-free for up to 90 days. Just check your passport is in good nick: it needs at least six months’ validity and a blank page for stamps before you board. No extra paperwork needed, just pain au chocolat on arrival.
For flights to France, aim to reach your home airport about three hours before take-off. That gives you space to check in, drop your bags and clear security without the rush: a smoother start before the long stretch to Paris or wherever your French plans begin.
