Our one night stay at 61 Durham was very nice. The hotel is located about 10 minutes drive from Durham city centre in very nice grounds on the edge of Pittington Village. Parking was free and only a few steps from the main entrance. We were allocated room 218 on the second floor, an attic room with a sloping ceiling overlooking the lawned rear garden. The room was clean and comfortable with a small but nice bathroom and a decent shower with really good water pressure. Our bed was soft and comfortable and the room was quiet so we had a good nights sleep. Breakfast in the orangery dining room was very good and the staff both at reception and generally throughout our stay were very friendly and attentive. A really good option if you're visiting Durham and want somewhere close but without the noise and bustle of the city.

First time staying here, but would definitely stay again. I chose 61 due to the good reviews on Hotels.com. Wonderful quiet location. The staff are so friendly, helpful and polite. I ate in the restaurant, slow roasted beef. Good sized portion and well cooked. Reasonably priced too. The room, 202, was just right for someone travelling alone. The WiFi connection and quality was easy and an acceptable speed The bathroom was clean and tidy. The toilet has a soft close lid so no lids crashing down if you forget to close it when you get up at stupid or clock for a wee. The matteress was very comfortable, some hotels skimp on a decent matteress. 61 spent well on the quality of the mattress. The pillows were ok too. A couple of small disappointments were the hot water tap provided very cold water, though the shower was very warm? The room was a bit cold, however, I can understand the hotel being prudent with their heating costs. Would I stay again? YES

TV in the room had no signal apparently it hadn’t been working for two weeks. Breakfast was appalling sausages were not cooked they were stone cold inside and out eggs just tasted of vinegar not edible another guest couldn’t eat there breakfast said it terrible. Really bad attitude at breakfast very abrupt. This is not what you expect from a hotel !!!!! The bedroom was very cold, there is a positive the water was hot

Positives: The bed was very comfy. Breakfast was excellent. The grounds & interior of the hotel are stunning. Staff were very attentive Negatives: No wardrobe although hangers are suspended from a bar for you to hang clothes. No iron & ironboard provided. No tissue box. Hole in hand towel. Room hadn't been cleaned properly - cobwebs on inside of window, TV remote covered in dust, dust in mirror edges

Room was true to it's name - the cosy room. No wardrobe although hangers are suspended from a bar for you to hang clothes. No iron & ironboard provided, no tissue box. The bed was very comfy so I had a good sleep. Breakfast was excellent, everything tasted so good. The grounds & interior of the hotel are stunning. The only real downside was the sub-par cleanliness in my room - cobwebs on inside of window, TV remote covered in dust, dust filling the bottom edge of the mirror, hole in hand towel.

Majority of staff seemed to be new and were still in the training progress so things took a little longer than expected but all very nice and I'm sure they will be great once trained up. Nice hotel.

Staff were all pleasant and helpful and the public areas of the hotel were comfortable and welcoming. My room was clean, quiet and the bed was large and very comfortable. My only niggles were the lack of small items such as tissues and cotton wool pads. Also, as with so many hotel rooms, there wasn’t a mirror with decent lighting for applying makeup. I take my own illuminating mirror with me on my travels because this is almost always the case.

Could be a beautiful boutique hotel. It’s a little tired . Front door ( first impression) was rotted away in places and needed replacing. Great bathroom in the Sanctuary Suite just wish the bath was in it and not in the bedroom- that’s just down to taste- not my cup of tea 🛁. 2 out of the 3 lamps in our room weren’t working. A bottle of water in the room would have been nice but not offered. Hotel condition overall requires more attention to detail. Staff were great- service was very efficient, helpful and friendly. Good restaurant although a little disappointed that last food order was at 8pm as I was visiting my mother in hospital and didn’t get back in time. Cooked breakfast was good but not much left on the buffet table- no pastries left, managed to get the last of the orange juice and just a spoonful of fruit salad left to go with my Greek yogurt.

The hotel is beautiful and quiet. The rooms are well decorated. Unfortunately you really can hear everything that goes on in adjoining rooms. Our room was not cleaned during nor the bed made when we stayed which felt a bit sub optimal. The breakfast was very nice. I enjoyed being able to go for a run in the morning straight from the hotel.

Bed sheet had a red stain which looked like blood. Complained to staff & was told it was red wine that they already knew about but hadn’t told me or changed the sheet before my arrival. We were told that they was awaiting a solution from the upholsterer as they couldn’t remove the stain. The shower tray was not clean from last use prior to our arrival & still wasn’t cleaned after we complained & housekeeping had attended. Red stain was still present after bed had been made. Window latch on sash window was broken as was the safety cable so any little ones could have fallen out if staying in the room. Toilet roll holder on wall & bathroom door handle were both very loose. On morning after first night stay, the main light switch broke & the rocker switch fell off causing other switches for main light to trip leaving us without a main light & having to rely on lamps. Immediately raised this with staff but 24hrs later this had not been repaired. Hotel provided an upgrade for final night to a larger room. Window issues were the same in the new room. Breakfast was good, experience in restaurant for dinner..very bad! Both ordered the mixed grill & prompted waitress on steak preference. Asked for medium rare & steak was like leather and we were only given butter knives. When questioned was told steak is cooked in advance of order. Wife’s pork steak was under cooked & request was made to cook for longer but it never came back as it had been left in the oven & chef had gone home!
