Dataran Merdeka is a large square where the Malaysian independence was declared in 1957. Also known as Merdeka Square, this famous landmark is surrounded by several heritage buildings, such as St. Mary's Cathedral and Sultan Abdul Samad Building. These days, the square regularly hosts open-air concerts, sporting events, and the Merdeka Parade held every August.
