Built on the former site of Edo Castle, Tokyo Imperial Palace is the Emperor of Japan's main residence. Only the outer gardens are open to the public throughout the year. However, visitors are allowed to see Japan's imperial family members from the inner grounds on January 2 and the Emperor's Birthday. Parts of the inner compound can also be viewed during guided tours that must be reserved in advance through the Imperial Household Agency.
