Boutiquehotel Amadeus

The experience with a young front desk girl on duty the Sunday we checked was the start of a disappointing stay. She couldn’t get us out of her presence fast enough and spoke very limited English. They are still using Covid 19 to only man front desk from 8-6 every day. There are no instructions as to what you do if you have a problem from 6 pm to 8 am. There is no bottled water in the room, no refrigerator nothing except rancid smelling soap that looked like it had been in shower a very long time and the shower hadn’t been cleaned properly in quite a while. I went to the store down the street and bought a brush and cleaning supplies for the shower. The grout was covered in black mold. Breakfast is a joke. Tiny croissants but they do have a good do it yourself coffee machine. The elevator is the size of an American refrigerator so if you’re claustrophobic be prepared to walk up steep stairs. The location is great. There is no air conditioning but they did find a fan for us. The house keepers are the sweetest. I think they call themselves a 4 star but in reality it’s more like a 2.

Important information. There is no breakfast in the hotel…………….We booked with breakfast and in the arrival they told us there is no breakfast available anyway.. is only coffee with some fake croissant.. only 1 per person. What a shame for so expensive hotel 2 nights 350€

Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel. If it were a cheap 2-star hotel, this review might be different. But Boutiquehotel Amadeus advertises itself as a 4 star hotel (and is expensive, within that category). Let me start with the only good thing about it: the location. Now, on to a much bigger list, all the reasons to avoid this hotel. Everything in the two-bedroom suite was old, rickety, loud, lights don't work properly, walls are scuffed, everything permeated by a musty old sweat smell. Visible mold (and strong moldy smell) in the bathroom areas. There are steps between the bedrooms, the hallway and the bathroom. There is even a bright motion activated light in the hallway to make sure anybody going to the bathroom wakes other people up. There is no AC, only loud portable fans, and you can't open windows because it is so loud outside.  The reception lady couldn't have been less interested in welcoming us, the only thing she wanted was to let us know that there were croissants available in the morning but you could only take one per person. That's what they meant by "including breakfast". Reception closes at 6pm, btw, and then there is nobody around, quite literally. Note; when checking out, we explained some of what was wrong with the room, and they offered a very small, pointless discount. Note: we still paid way too much. Salzburg is a lovely city, but this is a hotel to avoid.

Beautiful hotel in a great location. Great little bar and record shop across the street. Plenty of restaurants and cafes just steps from the front door.. The rooms were quite nice. No air conditioning so consider the forecast when booking. Our last day was near 90F. They do provide a beat up fan, but it was a bit uncomfortable sleeping when temps are high. When temps are cooler, you can open the windows and watch all the activity on the street below. Trash trucks and street sweepers roll through very early and the bell tower next door will remind you of the time, so light sleepers beware. The WiFi did not work the entire stay despite alerting the front desk. We had a great experience right up until check out. We needed to leave for the airport at 8am, but reception wasn’t open yet to check out even though the reception worker was there and aware we were trying to leave. We left the keys at the desk, but as we were loading into the car she was very rude and started accusing us of trying to steal. We owed $28 in city tax and were by no means trying to avoid payment. Quite the opposite. At all of our other stops on our family vacation, the hotels had collected the city tax at check in and we weren’t made aware that we still owed a balance. Reception is closed all night and doesn’t open until 8am, so we weren’t sure how the process was supposed to work. That was an unfortunate way to end a fantastic stay in a beautiful city.

My whole family loved this hotel so much. Perfect location and comfortable historic rooms. I loved the little coffee area, it was so nice to come down, sit and enjoy in the mornings. They offer croissants for breakfast which was perfect for us. Its located so close to everything. We look forward to coming back and staying again.
