Authentic Cambodian Angkor Cottage

We booked this place for the night of 10/18/2024 because the good reviews and also the close location to Angkor Wat. However, when we arrived around 6 pm, there were only three kids (7, 5, 3-year-old?) at home. They do not speak English. We waited about 45 min. Still no adult home. It was very scary - dark, in the country yard, hot and humid, no air conditioning... My husband went out and knocked at least 3 other homes, finally got one spoke English and gave a call to the phone# on the booking sheet. Another 10 min later, the owner came back on Tuck-tuck. He toke us to our room - No WIFI! He told us that WIFI was not working and we had to wait to next day. But we would check out next day in the early morning (5 am) to see sunrise at Angkor Wat and then visiting other temples! Finally he agreed to drop us at a hotel near the down town Siem Reap. The hotel is very nice - the charge is about the same - the conditions are much better. I would seriously suggest you NOT to stay at Authentic Cambodian Angkor Cottage! The scariest day of my life - dark evening, in the middle of no where, no adults, scary stories you heard about Cambodia...!

I had the best time staying with Sophat, Dany and their beautiful family 😊 they were amazing hosts, I felt very welcome and enjoyed staying in a comfortable, authentic Cambodian house. Close to Angkor and other temples, the house is actually inside the UNESCO World heritage area. Only a short bike ride the Angkor, and there is a designated bike path the whole way along the main road. The family were so friendly, Dany makes amazing breakfast. The room has great mosquito nets on the beds and fans in the room for comfort. For the 3 days I stayed, I did not see a single mosquito even though it was 2months into the rainy season 10/10. The wonderful sounds of frogs sent me to to sleep every night ❤️ Bathroom and shower are also good.

Positive: The family, most especially the kids and the mom, is super welcoming and friendly. The girls are very playful. If you are adventurous and local Cambodian life intrigues you, this is a great experience (suggested to stay maximum 2 nights and consider booking hotels closer to the center of Siem Reap afterwards). The breakfast was amazing. You get to choose from the menu and they’ll cook it fresh for you. The entire property has very relaxing atmosphere as it is surrounded with lots of greenery. Negative: The price is way higher than booking a nice hotel with a swimming pool and AC in the city center. We booked the room during the dry season (April) and we were unable to sleep due to extreme heat in the room. We normally are not picky travellers but this was unbearable. We were supposed to stay for 4 nights but we checked out on the 3rd day. The man/owner somehow is more interested in making money than the guests’ experience. For example, as the home stay is far away from the center, the owner charges the food double the price than you would pay in the center. Additionally, it feels like there were no investment in upgrading the property to improve the homestay experience (e.g. mobile cooler for guestroom) and for the entire family’s living conditions. The music of the neighbors is quite annoying starting at 6am to late night. Instead of enjoying the sound of nature, you listen to sometimes loud party music. No Wifi in the property even if it was mentioned in the booking app. We try to have a very objective review but please continue booking this hotel to support the kids’ education and future as they have so much potentials.

Real authentic experience with a lovely sweet family. Sokhat and his wife Dany and the kids were the sweetest people ever. Me and my boyfriend had a great time playing and living with them for a 3 days. The place is close to all temples they had tuk tuk and connections with other transportation options. Highly recommended. 😊

The breakfasts were always delicious. The location was great. I love children, so I had fun interacting with their 14 (?) year old son and 3 year old son. There are plenty of animals for animal lovers. The family will leave you to yourself if you want, but there is also a real opportunity to make a meaningful connection with kind and hospitable Cambodians. Sophat and his wife, Dany, are easy to get along with, and they speak good English. While it was not a problem for me, there is no western toilet on the premises (as of January, 2022). Also, though this is not at all the fault of the host family, the location does have some noisy neighbors (karaoke, roosters, dogs). You can either embrace this as part of the authentic experience of Cambodia, or suffer (a little) through the evenings and early mornings (when its loudest). Most of the day is very peaceful. After traveling a little more through Cambodia, I have realized that the noise level was pretty much similar wherever I stayed.
