Established in 1827 by Indian immigrants, Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. The temple is particularly famous for its soaring gopura or entrance tower adorned with colorful sculptures of Hindu deities, typical of the Dravidian architectural style from South India. The annual Hindu fire-walking festival, Thimithi, is held on the temple grounds in October or November.
