There are many theories about how Kuching got its name. There is a theory saying cats influence the name behind this place, but no one is sure about this.

But because of this unique name, the city of Kuching is full of animals that are a favourite of many people.

Everywhere, you can see motifs and symbols in all forms, from statues to murals. And of course, wild cats are also plentiful here. So if you are a cat fan, here is what you should do if you stop in Kuching:

1. Welcomed by Kuching Great Kuching

Next to the Padungan Circle, close to the city of Kuching, there is a 2½ tall white cat statue. The cat lifted one of its legs as if to greet the visitor. Don't forget to take a picture with this famous cat.

During the festive season or Chinese New Year celebration, this Great Cat will be dressed in certain clothes for the celebration.

2. Have fun at the Cat Museum

You are not a cat fanatic if you do not visit the Cat Museum. Located in the North Kuching City Hall building on a high hill, the museum is filled with a variety of cat-related equipment, such as porcelain figurines, ‘Cats’ posters from Broadway music and more!

Here, you can learn about the role and influence of cats in the history and culture of Kuching. (Want to learn about proverbs related to cats can also be here, such as 'like a cat on the wall' and various other interesting proverbs.)

Hours of operation: 9.00 am - 5 pm
Fee for the camera: RM3 (phone camera) and RM5 (video camera)

3. Take a selfie with the famous Cat Statue

This iconic Cat Statue is located right in the middle of the busy intersection of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Abell. And this statue is not just one but a family. Really cute!

4. Stop by to play with the cats at Meow Meow Cat Cafe

Kuching city is not complete if there is no cat cafe, right? So, let’s stop for a moment at Meow Meow Cat Cafe in Sin Yen Garden.

Just a 10 -minute drive from Kuching Waterfront, you can play while enjoying drinks and snacks here. The cafe is located on the top floor of the pet shop and the entrance fee is RM10, including drinks.

While you wait for your drinks and snacks, you can spend some time playing with the cats in the playroom - there are 8 puppies living in this cafe.

A popular spot with locals and cat enthusiasts, this cafe is often crowded on weekends, but if you visit on a weekday as I do, these cats are all for you!

Things to know:

The cafe operates as usual and you can eat inside or want to pack up, but otherwise, you will miss the chance to observe these cat patterns!
The cafe is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but for the Sunday faithful, the cafe will close at 2:30 p.m.

5. Find other unique cat figurines

Isn't the city of Kuching only two cat monuments, right?

Of course, not-there are many more unique cat figurines that are everywhere in Kuching especially cloud spots and road circles. See if there are many more people scattered in the middle of the city, especially in public spaces and circles ... See if you can see them all!
