Older hotel. Well kept and comfortable. Dinner was delicious. Blankets warm. It’s zero degrees but we are loving it!

This big hotel is a little bit old-fashioned. However, overall the facilities were good and the buffet dinner and breakfast were very good. It is possible to book a private onsen bath for an extra fee, which is a very pleasant experience.
We would definitely stay in this hotel again if we have the chance of visiting Sounkyo again.

Excellent atmosphere and buffet - the international buffet was of reasonable standard. The hotel made an effort to create a positive atmosphere by including activities such as free shuttle to an outdoor lighting exhibition - it was an added bonus when my friend and I saw a family of wild deers at the location! The hotel also provided a bingo activity where all visitors can join. Most, if not all, participants will win gift!
Another added benefit is the free shuttle service to its sister hotel's onsen!

Overall a nice experience - we went half board and both breakfast and dinner were good. They have a sister hotel that allows you to have dinner there, or visit the onsen. Both dinner and onsen were better in their sister hotel.
Good location to the mountain and easy walking to the cable car for mountain access. Next time, we will stay in the sister hotel

The room is spacious. However, the staff is not so helpful. We requested them to make a reservation at a restaurant serving crabs and they said it's fully booked. But when we went there to ask, there were tables available. Also when we arrived, we were asked to park at a carpark 2 blocks from the hotel. We noted there was a carpark right at the hotel building. We tried asking the reception if we could park our car at hotel and she said there is height restriction. However, I don't think my car was over the limit.

Upon arrival we felt like we had arrived at the Shining hotel just as described in an earlier review, but at 3pm its lights on and showtime! Buses and cars arrive and the reception desk comes to life! After a botched car rental ( thanks Expedia : ( - we took the bus from Kamikawa which was easy and cheap. The hotel onsen was great, we went five times over our two days! Breakfast and Dinner buffet were included - the egg omelet was my fave breakfast item. Loads of food choices. We walked to the Ryusei waterfalls and took the ropeway and chairlift and then hiked to the top of Kurodake. The town itself was quiet - June 26, almost deserted - but a stunning place to hike and onsen. Took the bus back to Kamikawa with ease. It’s an older crowd at the hotel, regimented meal times, but a really enjoyable experience.

A major renovation is overdue. Everything needs to be replaced except for the helpful front desk staff.
The food is of dismal quality though they seem to churn them out in quantity.
The onsen has very slippery floors, more so than other hotels’ onsens. Not a hotel I would recommend to anyone .

Our package included breakfast and dinner buffet ! Not too much surprises on foods , and all foods were the same on my both stays ! Dining music was a little annoying, hope they can switch to something soft and relaxation! Great onsen !

The hotel is really old and due for a makeover. The room and bathroom are not very clean. Place smells stale too. The food served in the restaurant was edible but not great. I couldn't wait to leave the hotel. If you are driving, you should consider staying somewhere like Asahikawa with more hotel options.

I read the reviews and I was concerned and maybe why it was better than expected. The variety of food for dinner was great and a bit overwhelming... because I wanted to try them all.
Overall I would recommend for a mid price budget hot springs.

The stay was okay. I'm not sure if this is the case for all the hotels in the area but this facility seems to cater to Chinese and Korean tour groups who bring the volume of people that help this relatively large hotel stay in business. Facility was clean but a bit tired. Need to get to the onsen and have dinner early to beat the crowds.

We booked this hotel a bit last minute as we changed our destination from Asahidake to Kurodake when the Asahidake Ropeway announced it will be closed for maintenance on the days of our travel. While we enjoyed Sounkyo area the hotel was average. We stayed two nights and had half board, the buffet variety were virtually the same each day. For breakfast, staple like bread is not available. I do understand they mainly cater to local tourists. On the other hand we enjoyed the onsen experience especially the outdoor one.
