Mersing is a town, mukim and the capital of Mersing District, Johor. Estimated population of 21,670 in 2009, Mersing town lies on the main trunk road that connects southern as well as eastern Johor with the east coast of Pahang state including Pahang's capital Kuantan town on the way to the Tioman Islands. The two main roads at this town are lined with traditional and modern shop houses that provide a range of modern services. There are traditional fruit sellers, grocers and modern supermarkets, plus a range of local restaurants and fast food outlets and several open 24-hours that can be found here. Once a small town and consists of Malay village, Mersing still retain its natural surroundings such as jungle reserves and unspoiled beaches, rocky coasts and offshore kelongs for pleasure angling. On top of that, Air Papan and Penyabung beaches are about 15 and 30 minutes’ drive north of the town respectively.
Several bus companies operate direct services to Mersing such as Transnasional from Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, and Singapore. It takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes hours to arrive at the Mersing Bus Terminal. From Kuala Lumpur, you take the S&S International while from Singapore, the cheapest way to Mersing is to first take a bus from from Queen Street Bus Terminal to Larkin terminal in Johor Bahru.
From Kuala Lumpur, you can take North- South highway to Mersing which consumes around 4 hours. You can also either rent a car or take a taxi.
Surrounded by clean blue waters with jungle vegetation, Rawa Island is owned by the Johor Sultanate. The island consists of two small resorts and suitable for weekend gateway with family and friends. The only way to get to Rawa Island is by boat from Mersing and Rawa Island is only 30 minutes speed boat ride or a 1 hour ferry ride. During the peak season (April to October), there are lot of ferries and speed boats moving between Mersing and Rawa, but during the off season there will be just 1 or 2 rides per day. Ferries and overnight stays can be booked with the resort office on Jalan Abu Bakar in Mersing, or booked in advance.
Endau-Rompin is a beautiful national park in the southeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The name comes from the two rivers that run through the park which is the Endau River and the Rompin River. The national park is known for having the largest remaining population of the highly endangered Sumatran rhinoceros and also other animals that live in the national park are the white-handed gibbon, Malaysian tiger, Asian elephant, wild boar, tapir, slow loris, deer, long-tail macaques and leopards. Among the many bird species that live in the park are the hornbills and kingfishers. Besides that, there are many wonderful waterfalls and visitors can also see Orang Asli tribes. Entry to the park requires a special permit (RM10) from the Johor National Park Corporation.
