Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is established in 1964 situated on the edge of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. Its purpose is to rescue orphaned and abandoned juvenile orangutans, whereby they learn to fend for themselves. The best time to visit is at feeding times at approximately 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. as this is the probably chance of seeing the orangutans and other monkeys such as the long-tailed macaques. The admission ticket allows visitors to enter the park two times a day – for the morning feeding and again for the afternoon feeding. The feeding times may be delayed on the occasion if it is raining. Bringing a poncho is quite useful since there are no shelter when it is raining. Umbrellas won’t help much and it may block views of others due to the torrential sideways. Having small turn up during the morning feeding session, it is advisable to take the hiking trail called the Bird Trail that runs about 2 km in one-way route. This trail remains open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. In ensuring the security and safety of the inhabitants, strict rules apply to all. Small backpacks are sometimes allowed with a very limited permissible items. No water bottles or any insect repellent or any snacks are allowed to enter the site. Lockers are available free of charge at the entrance to leave any bags. When expecting biting insects, visitors shall spray on the repellent just before entering.
Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre is located just next to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. It was established in 2008 to rescue sun bears from deforestation, commercial poaching and the pet trade. Bears that can readapt to the forest are released while those that are still unable to fend for themselves are provided with long-term living environment. Sun bears are the smallest bear species and their love of honey gives them the alternative name ‘honey bear’. Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre is the only sun bear sanctuary in the world. As of July 2016, there are about 40 bears on site and it is estimated that there are only 10,000 sun bears left in the wild.
Rainforest Discovery Centre is an environmental education centre situated within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve to create public awareness and educate the importance of conserving forests, as well as to promote the sustainable use of forest resources. There is a 147 meter long canopy walkway that portrays great views of the forest and also good for bird watching.
Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is a privately-owned sanctuary located within an oil palm estate in the centre of the mangrove forests of Semawang. This place offers the visitors to observe the proboscis monkey and other animals such as the wild boars, flying squirrels, crocodiles and fireflies. With the arrival of Europeans, the Malays nicknamed the proboscis monkey as the “Dutch monkey”.
