Seremban is a town and the capital of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, located within Seremban District. On 9 September 2009, Seremban was to be declared as a city; however it was later deferred due to technical reasons. However, the idea of granting city status has been brought up again and Seremban is expected to become a city in the near future. Seremban is the business and commercial centre for most towns and villages in Negeri Sembilan. During the weekends, residents from outlying areas come to Seremban by commuter train or buses to shop in Seremban. The famous beach, Port Dickson is just about 30 to 45 minutes from Seremban, while the well-known shopping district, Nilai 3 is located approximately about 20 minutes drive from Seremban town.

Seremban was founded as Sungai Ujong, named after a nearby river of the same name. While the town was renamed Seremban thereafter, the Sungai Ujong name most prominently persists as a street name for a road adjoining the southern side of town, Sungai Ujong Road. Sungai Ujong came into existence with the discovery of tin ore in the 1870s like most major towns in Peninsular Malaysia. The discovery of tin in a nearby area saw an influx of Arab, Malay and Chinese immigrants to work on the mines and farms. Amongst its Chinese-speaking community, the town is also affectionately referred to as “Fu Yong”, which translates to “Hibiscus” – however, that name is not recognised officially.

Historically, Negeri Sembilan is influenced by the Minangkabau and thus, Seremban is the centre of the Minangkabau culture in Malaysia. Minangkabau, derived from the Malay word “menang kerbau”, which means "winning buffalo", are famous for their unique roof architecture which resembles buffalo horns. Many buildings in Seremban adapted this feature, such as the Seremban Municipal Council Hall, the Wisma Negeri and the State Museum. People of Negeri Sembilan are also known for the practice of an ancient Malay tradition called Adat Perpatih, where women are given a higher social status than men.

By Plane

If you are traveling by air, nearest airport is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (IATA: KUL, ICAO: WMKK) is an international airport, which located in Sepang, Selangor. Both terminals, KLIA and KLIA2 airport is located about 40 minutes from the Seremban.

By Car

It is very easy to get to Seremban by car. The North-South PLUS Highway is a modern toll road that runs from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. Seremban is an exit off the highway.You could also use Route 1, which is toll-free, but slower, as it goes through some small towns. Be aware, however, it is a single-land highway, and being stuck behind a slow-moving vehicle is a real possibility.There is a direct route to Seremban if you are coming from Port Dickson. Driving around in Seremban itself is easy enough as the downtown area is relatively small.

In-town public buses are available at reasonable price, depending on the type of bus and destination. Besides running ordinary routes in housing areas and on main roads of Negeri Sembilan, the Cityliner buses also perform regular service routes between Seremban and KLIA2, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Nilai and Banting. Metered taxi, Uber and Grabcar service can easily be found at affordable price. You also can rent a car to tour around in Seremban City Center.

Tourist Attractions

If you visit Seremban city, be sure to try their signature nasi padang, a Minangkabau dish with coconut cream and bird’s eye chilies as well as the famous siew pau, a Chinese baked bun filled with minced pork fillings. For Muslims, there are buns with traditional flavour and chicken-filling which are halal.
