National University of Malaysia is a university located at Bangi which is about thirty minutes away from the town center of Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory. It is placed near the main road off Persiaran Universiti and is easily spotted when driving past Jalan Bangi. The institution is the brainchild of several initiatives born from the aspirations of the nationalists to uphold the Malay Language as a language of knowledge. This has started as early as 1923 by the writer Abdul Kadir Adabi who suggested establishing a national university as a move against British colonization. Despite the resistance from British, the idea remained not wavered and persisted till the early days of post-independence in 1969.
A year later, the university was established and begun opening its doors to its first 192 students in Jalan Pantai Baru, Kuala Lumpur that houses Faculties of Science, Arts and Islamic Studies. In October 1977, it moved to its current campus in Bangi which continued to expand to cover 1096 hectares of size comprising over more than ten faculties as well as twelve residential colleges. In present, in addition to the main campus, the National University of Malaysia also has two health campuses, one in Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz and the UKM Medical Center in Cheras. The university now has 30 years’ worth of research foundation which enables it to be endowed as Malaysian Research University in October 2006 as well as winning the Prime Minister’s Quality Award in the same year.
People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive through the Kuala Lumpur – Seremban Highway / E37 and North-South Expressway (PLUS) / E2 exiting at Bangi before continuing the journey towards National University of Malaysia. The journey could take up around thirty minutes or less depending on the current traffic situation.
From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, visitors can catch the Express Rail Link (ERL) train which goes to KL Sentral/Bandar Tasik Putrajaya/Cyberjaya/Salak Tinggi/KLIA route. There, one can board the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) southbound coach and stop by the UKM station before opting for public transportation to go to the campus.
