North Maluku

North Maluku is a province located in the eastern side of Indonesia. This province was once the center of the four greatest Islamic sultanates on the eastern side of the Indonesian archipelago. The Bacan, Jailolo, Tidore, and Ternate Sultanates are the Moloku Kie Raha (The Four Mountains of Maluku).

In the past, together with the Maluku province, North Maluku was known as the only place in the world where cloves and nutmeg, the most valuable spices at that time, could be found. This drew in spice traders from around the world, such as the Portuguese, the Spaniards, and, later on, the Dutch. Maluku and North Maluku then become known as the Spice Islands.

In North Maluku, the deep history of Dutch colonialism and spice trade blends together with untouched natural wonders. You can visit the historical sites that are still standing to this day, such as Fort Tolukko and Oranje Fortress, or explore North Maluku’s exquisite beauty, like Sulamadaha Beach, Kupa Kupa Beach, or Mount Gamalama.
