"Found in the shadow of the perfect cone of the world-famous Mayon Volcano, Albay’s capital boasts both man-made and natural beauties. Take in the Spanish colonial era Daraga church and Cagsawa Ruins Park that both boast breathtaking views of Mt. Mayon, or take a sunset walk down Legazpi Boulevard. A trip to Legazpi City would not be complete without a day trip to Mayon Volcano National Park and the Quitinday underground river."

Legazpi City in the province of Albay is the perfect spot to view the majestic Mayon Volcano. In addition to that, it is also a hub for natural wonders, delicious cuisines, colorful festivals, and beautiful and warm people. It’s a good place to walk around in and capture stunning views and scenes if you have a good camera.

Legazpi City

Most people go to Legazpi City to see the perfect cone-shaped Mayon Volcano but this City of Fun and Adventure offers more than just what satisfies the eyes. Exploring the capital city of Albay province and the biggest city of the Bicol region always turns out to be a treat for all your senses.

How to Go

By plane

The fastest way to arrive in the city is by air. Daily trips of local airlines from Manila to the Legazpi Airport usually takes one hour. There are also flights from Cebu to Legazpi City. The airport is also open for international chartered flights.

By boat or ferry

The port of Legazpi receives regular passenger trips from Sorsogon City and the municipality of Lapu-Lapu.

By land transportation

From Metro Manila, there are direct bus trips to Legazpi City, or you can ride buses going to Sorsogon, Visayas or Mindanao which stop at Legazpi City. Trips will last 10-12 hours. Buses and jeepneys from neighboring provinces also have regular trips to the city. The Philippine National Railway (PNR) maintains a commuter rail service between Legazpi City and Naga City. You can also take a long drive on your car through South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), take the Sto. Tomas exit, then drive along Maharlika Highway.

Getting Around

Within the city, you can travel around by jeepney, tricycle, taxi and pedicabs (bicycles with sidecars). You can also fancy using your phone’s GPS and map application and walk around the city.

Tourist Attractions

Mayon Volcano

The nearly-perfect cone of Mayon Volcano is impossible to miss when you visit this city. A short trip towards the Cagsawa Ruins site will reward you with iconic postcard-staple pictures of you with the Philippine’s most active volcano in the background.

For a picturesque view of the sea and the monuments of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and the JCI Tourism Marker, you can rent a bike or opt to walk along the Legazpi Boulevard.

Cagsawa Ruins

There are also a lot of historical landmark, old churches, parks and monuments to visit within the city.

Top Things to Do

Lignon Hill Zipline

Ride an ATV going up Mayon Volcano if conditions in and around the volcano permits it. Or you could try the zipline at Lignon Hill with Mayon as the backdrop.

Get to know the city more by take a historical tour starting from a visit at the Legazpi City Museum, the Japanese Tunnel and the Albay Gulf Landing Monument; or by joining their celebration of Ibalong Festival or other festivals.

Bicolano cuisine is characterized by its use of coconut milk and chili. Do not leave Legazpi City without trying Bicol express, Laing, Binut-ong, and Pinangat. Their sweets are also worth trying. If you are feeling adventurous, have a bowl of chili-flavored ice cream. Grab some pili tarts and nuts before leaving the city.

Where to Eat

Sili Ice Cream

There are a lot of restaurants in Legazpi City offering various cuisines but if you want to have a taste of authentic Bicolano cuisine, Waway’s Restaurant, is probably the most famous place to go. 1st Colonial Grill will offer you a lot of choices on their menu, but they are famous for their sili ice cream. You should also dine at Caffe San Marco, Pares King and Red Cheese Pizza.

    The Oriental Legazpi
To be honest, I had so much expectation with Oriental Legazpi as it is one of the top star hotels in Legazpi. First, they got us in at 2:30PM, that was us asking them if our room is already ready for the third time. Implying that if we did not ask, they wouldn’t let us in. Second, the AC in the room needs to be turned on manually, no remote (so you have to keep standing whenever you need to turn on the AC. Third, the pool was dirty, chairs by the pool are wrecked. Lastly, which is the most disappointing part, the airport shuttle. They forgot our reservation. We were scheduled to be picked by 1:00, around 12:45 no one was asking or calling us, by 1:00pm after asking about the shuttle. The guy said that the van going to the airport has already left. Golite Hostel
I booked this room overnight thinking the location was near the city center and to have a comfortable stay. I tried to ask for an earlier check-in because I arrived so early from a flight only to know that they charge 100php for each hour, which I politely declined. To my horror, I wasn't aware this was a RedDoorz brand which I was avoiding due to a negative experience of going to a wrong location which happened again this time. So, I arrived initially at their other location so I booked another car to go to the right one which was hard to find by the way since there were no signs of golite hostel at all. So we had to ask people where was it as the pin location was also not exactly correct. Voila, the place was just decent for a 500-700 peso stay similar to a motel. They ask for 300 deposit which I don't know what for since there were no minibar or anything. The amenity was was a toothbrush, toothpaste and shampoo/conditioner in a sachet. The toilet's condition wasn't that clean, at least for me. The worse was the condition of the towels they provide. Apart from it not being uniform, one was gray the other white, worse was the white one seemed like an overused towel. The water pressure was also quite slow. You need to wait out some time to fill a small bucket of water. Never coming back.

The room is old, there were falling wood pest on the head part of the bed. We ordered food for lunch but it took almost 1hr to cook and the serving was not worth the price. The room service staff was not doing random rounds on the occupied rooms to offer a room service.

    Night and Day Inn
I booked 1 standard room for 4 nights (3 pax). When we arrived, there's this promo (stay for 3 nights and get 4th night for free) but we were not told about it when we inquire via text, call, and PM (messenger). Anyways, the room has 2 double beds. It was spacious and clean. Wifi signal is good. Aircon works well however, the main door's lock is broken. Location is good as It's just one trike away from SM Legazpi and Grand Terminal. By the way, Nanay Nelia (caretaker) was very kind and accommodating. She cooked our breakfast and it was super yummy. Worth the money.
