Naraya Ryokan is a beautiful, charming traditional ryokan by any standards. But what makes Naraya Ryokan special are the innkeepers, Akiko-san and her parents, and their staff. They make you feel genuinely and warmly welcome each time you step into the ryokan. The three rooms we occupied are all authentic and traditional, so it's your mistake if you come expecting the Park Hyatt. But the rooms are spacious and well maintained. The kaiseki meal served in a private room is a meal that we'll be taking about for years to come. Don't miss it and the accompanying Japanese breakfast. Last but certainly not least is its Onsen. The water is kept at a perfect temperature for soaking awhile, and what more can be said about soaking in the outdoor Onsen while watching snowflakes drift down? Naraya Ryokan is indeed located on a special street in the town, and is just a few minutes walk from Yu Road. Sadly, ryokan such as Naraya are disappearing too quickly. When booking I was concerned that Naraya might be a tad overpriced. In fact, it was money wisely spent on what will always be a fantastic memory.
