The room was spacious, clean and comfortable and the staff uphold the Japanese tradition of hospitality really well. Meals were nicely presented with some less orthodox choices amongst the familiar favourites. There is a good variety of baths to choose from. The proximity of the smoking room to the dining room was a bit of a shame when smells wafted in from time to time. Otherwise, Shin Tsuta was marvellous overall.

Another piece of nostalgia. Could be the film set for a 1960s drama. Look out for some charming brand names with the Club Casablanca and Pansy Cafe. Such is the desire to keep the original feel that I upped the experience to four stars. Wrap yourself in the past here and enjoy the water which, I am reliably told, comes directly from the mountains and needs no artificial heat on its journey through the pipes into the baths. There is a small outside pool for men, a bit hemmed in but the water is excellent. Indoors, there are two pools, one of which has water jets to relieve aching backs.

Lovely Ryokan with spacious rooms and great location. The spread of traditional Japanese food was delicious and comprehensively intricate. The service was top notch and personal with every effort made to bridge the language barrier. Totally recommended.

Wow. Really good place to stay while in town, but a bit quirky by western standards. The food is wonderful and the service is exceptional.

The overall feel is old, but the materials are well-made and the designs are elaborate and luxurious. I wonder how much it would cost to build this now. All the staff are friendly and kind. Cleanliness is also very good. The rice was also delicious. I really liked the open-air bath. Minus point: The air inside the building is crisp. The humidity seems to be below 30%. I would like a humidifier for the room if requested. There is also a smoking room near the restaurant, and the smell leaks out. I felt it was a waste.
