When we arrived to Puerto Princesa the hotel offered a free transfer van from the airport to the hotel. They were all very nice and helpful and they helped us to book a van to go to El Nido.

Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest and most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa is by air. Major airlines operate regular flights from Manila (MNL) to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can often find competitive fares if you book flight tickets in advance, especially during promotional periods.

While direct flights from other major cities like Cebu or Davao might be less frequent, connections through Manila are readily available. The cost of flights can vary significantly depending on the season, airline, and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options are often accessible. Planning your trip around flight deals can make your Palawan adventure more affordable.

For those who prefer land and sea travel, it is possible to reach Puerto Princesa via ferry from Manila, though this is a much longer journey, often taking over 24 hours. This option is typically chosen by travelers seeking a more scenic route or those who wish to avoid flying. Bus services are also available for shorter inter-island connections if you are already in Palawan.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: a dry season and a wet season. The dry season generally runs from November to May, offering sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's attractions. This period is also considered the peak tourist season.

The wet season typically occurs from June to October. During these months, you can expect intermittent rainfall, which can range from light showers to heavier downpours. However, the rain often doesn't last all day, and you can still enjoy many activities. Traveling during the wet season can mean fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, offering a different kind of appeal.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or May. These periods often provide pleasant weather conditions without the peak season influx. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Puerto Princesa offers its unique charm throughout the year.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Palawan's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of fresh seafood and local flavors. When in Puerto Princesa, be sure to try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the taste of the sea.

Another local specialty is Tamilok, a type of woodworm found in mangrove areas, often served fresh or fried. While it might sound adventurous, its taste is often described as briny and slightly sweet, similar to oysters. For a more conventional yet equally delicious option, grilled seafood is abundant. Freshly caught fish, prawns, and squid are often grilled to perfection and served with soy sauce and calamansi.

Don't leave Puerto Princesa without trying the local version of La Paz Batchoy or other hearty noodle soups, which are perfect for a comforting meal. For dessert, seek out local delicacies like Kalamansi Muffin, a light and zesty pastry that’s a popular pasalubong (souvenir). Exploring the local eateries and markets will give you a true taste of Palawan.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is known for its friendly locals and generally safe environment. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to be aware of local customs and safety practices. Always be respectful of religious sites and local traditions. When interacting with locals, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way.

For safety, it's advisable to keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. It's also a good idea to have the contact numbers of local authorities handy. The standard emergency number in the Philippines is 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for getting around the city. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Messenger to stay connected. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

This is a scam. The hotel does not exist, it shut down a year ago. We arrived there and were told by a local who happened to be outside that the hotel is shut. Everything was locked and the building was abandoned. Expedia have currently done nothing to fix the issue i.e. to get me a full refund as I had to prepay for my stay.

This property was closed already. Frustrating booking experience with Orbitz on our first day after arriving in the airport of Palawan. I hope my refund will get settled when I get back in Chicago next week. This property should be taken out from Orbitz. The last time I checked, it was still with them.

Friendly courteous staff. Nice gym & pool. Airport transport not reliable, 30 minutes late. Included breakfast buffet need some improvement ( cooked foods not warm & selection limited). Bath towels are very old & worn out, almost rags. Shower in bathroom has poor design ( prone to flooding bathroom floor since shower door don’t fully shut & shower floor has no barrier with bathroom floor).

Hotel reception staff are not overly helpful and would say they do the minimum to help and come across quite abrupt/rude - this is definitely not extended to all staff as the porters and staff in the restaurant were great! Air con in our room was leaking down the wall at 1am in the morning, contacted reception who fixed this by placing towels on the floor- probably not the safest resolution. Shower wasn’t very powerful and I had to ring reception twice to request a safety deposit box for the room which was advised as a standard facility but was not in the room upon arrival. WiFi isn’t the best also. In comparison to other hotels I saw at Puerto Princesa this hotel is of a higher standard and if I was to return I would more than likely stay there for that reason only. Hotel also charged us 750 pesos for transport to El Nido when the standard price is 500 pesos.

We stayed one night before we went to spend almost one week in EL Nido. Our first night was great however our second stay was not as good as the first one. We got a room with no wifi as there is a part of the hotel which has not wifi. Furthermore it’s incredibly noisy at night as it’s the room closer to the reception and the party place outside. We asked to the lady to change our room but are request was fully ignored.

Place is clean and staff friendly ready to advise about places to eat close by. The seafood restaurant in building was not open but places to eat walking distance are aplenty.

Was only here one night prior to heading to ElNido. Convenient to airport & other restaurants, bed was comfy. Pool looked nice but didn’t have time to enjoy it. Airport transport provided

I was bitten by bed bugs! The bathroom was not cleaned properly. Water in shower was not draining properly that it flows out to toilet area.

The breakfast wasn't bad at all. There weren't many people staying at the hotel so it was quiet, but the rooms left much to be desired. Don't be fooled by the pictures, my room looked like a college dorm room.

When we arrived to Puerto Princesa the hotel offered a free transfer van from the airport to the hotel. They were all very nice and helpful and they helped us to book a van to go to El Nido.

Love the pool and the gym.. two things that i complained about was the slow wifi connection.. and they should put some fridge in the standard rooms but overall my experience was great.. will definitely go back.
