Subhas Hotel, established in 1970, holds a special place in the hearts of those who lived in Jaffna during that era. At the time, staying in hotels was more of a dream than reality for ordinary locals; the hotel primarily catered to special invitees, business persons, and politicians. However, the onset of the civil war transformed Subhas Hotel into a temporary base for military personnel for many years. Following the military's withdrawal, the hotel once again opened its doors to the public, becoming an iconic location for residents who remember the struggles of the 70s and who now celebrate a sense of personal triumph over past hardships. Since the end of the civil war in 2009, many new hotels have emerged in Jaffna, providing more accommodation options for visitors. I chose to stay at Subhas Hotel to relive some nostalgic memories, and while my experience was a unique one, I thought it worth sharing for those considering a visit. For travelers from outside the northern region of Sri Lanka, it’s essential to manage expectations. The “deluxe room” provided me with air conditioning and a clean bed, which was a welcome relief. However, the amenities had their quirks—the shower in the washroom was not functional, requiring me to use a bucket and bowl for bathing. Additionally, while there was a toilet roll in the room, the lack of modern conveniences like toilet paper was notable. Breakfast was complimentary and adequate, though the room's windows lacked proper blackout curtains, allowing bright light to filter in during the early morning hours. On a positive note, the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, attending to all of my requests with warmth and efficiency. I do not intend to deliver a negative review; rather, I aim to provide an honest depiction of the accommodations for those unfamiliar with the region. If you’re looking to connect with Jaffna’s history and culture, Subhas Hotel is worth considering. However, if you are accustomed to contemporary hotel standards, you may want to explore other options in the area. Enjoy your stay in Jaffna!

Very Centrally Located. Walking distance from Train stations, Bus station.Right near the hospital complex. They welcomed us with a drink. The owner is a great person who gave us a lot of tips. Mr Karuna was really helpful and he did everything to make our stay great. Very kind personel in the reception too. Miss Jeni had everything ready for us. Subhas hotel is a very iconic hotel for Jaffna. Definitely recommend to stay there.

The best thing about Subhas Hotel is the location, adjacent to the Jaffna Hospital, with the Bus stand and railway station in walking distance. The hotel is steeped in history, having been open to guests from the early 1970s and witness to upheavals that's part of Jaffna folklore now. There's a large framed photograph by the hotel reception, of Puratchi Thalaivar MGR and Saroja Devi with an entourage, when they had visited the Hotel. The breakfast spread is very good, especially for guests from South India. Highly recommended for a comfortable stay, without stretching the budget. Room service is pretty good too, even if they seem short staffed. One drawback is that there's no lift, so if your room is in the second floor, may be a hassle trudging up and down, but the comfortable deluxe rooms up there are worth it. Appreciate the efficiency of Ms Jenny at the reception, and all the staff and management. The Nallur Kandasamy temple is a ten minute ride away, and staff at the reception oblige in arranging auto/tuk-tuks for guests, at reasonable rates
