I know it’s hard to expect a lot from sub-$50 accommodation, but still..
So, I’ve stayed in both HI hostels in SF in Downtown and Marina last year and this year, and the direction they’re going is frightening tbh.
In Marina I was told by the “housekeeping” that I need to get a private room to avoid random room checks (how many work hours you spend on “securing the pillows” in the dorm?) Then, the same “housekeeping” would open the door wide open while I am standing in the towel, and apparently I am not entitled to privacy, since it’s “shared accommodation” and I have to change in the “toilets” - that’s the exact words of the “manager”, that seems to have escaped the gulag recently and brought the corresponding values to the table (how’s that from the LEGAL perspective? Check California Civil Code, maybe?) And the fact that I came to the reception angry and “with an attitude” apparently voids my right to complain and gives the right to the reception person to directly confront me (how’s that from the service perspective?). I can have whatever attitude I want, and if you’re getting into my private space, what kind of attitude are you expecting? They would also lecture me on how I should “behave” in this respectable establishment.Since when does staff gets to dictate how a guest should feel?
I’ll partly omit the other stuff, like why do bathrooms that are closed for “cleaning” are closed for HOURS?
Overall, staff (not all of them) just doesn’t give a damn neither about their work performance or your stay.
