The aquarium is strategically located facing the Sakurajima volcano, the symbol of Kagoshima. The attraction houses 30,000 sea creatures from over 500 species primarily from the Kyushu region. The world's largest fish, the whale shark, can be found swimming in the Kuroshio Great Water Tank with the tuna. Other highlights in the aquarium include the exhibits for the tropical fish and live corals, the "Deep Sea of Kagoshima" where you can experience the marine life as if you were diving, the peacefully quiet "Jellyfish Corridor," and the Umiushi (sea slug) Research Center where scientists grow sea slugs and investigate their unusual biology. The "Touch Pool" is also popular as it allows you to interact with the sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and other creatures.
There are also plenty of daily events where the audience can participate in a whale shark feeding or an electric eel feeding, along with guided tours by staff. Stay tuned for when the dolphins swim out from their pool into the open ocean.
