Founded in the 10th century, Osaka Tenmangu is an important Shinto shrine dedicated to the Heian-period scholar, Sugawara Michizane. The shrine was destroyed by fire several times, but now it stands majestically as the venue of the Tenjin Matsuri festival held every July. The shrine's location, in the middle of office buildings and near the Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street, makes it a great place to quickly get away from Osaka's hustle and bustle.
