5 Places to Go Camping in Singapore for Nature Lovers!

2 years being trapped inside the country because of the COVID 19 pandemic, we have no choice other than exploring Singapore. You might have searched for hotels in Singapore and spent several staycations in Singapore to fill your off days. But have you tried camping in Singapore?

Maybe you haven’t thought about camping in Singapore at all. A lot of people might not know about where to go camping in Singapore as well and what steps you need to take if you want to go camping in Singapore.

Anyway, camping in Singapore will be a fun experience. You will be more engaged with nature, something you won’t always find if you choose to spend your weekend or holiday in a hotel. Camping is the best decision for all of you that love to explore and love being outside. But, if you’re not in those two categories, you can still try camping in Singapore as it will be a thrilling and exciting experience as well. All you have to do is just prepare the best tent and other equipment that are needed for camping.

If right now you are interested in going camping in Singapore, you have to learn about the camping permission first. Yes, you can’t just go without having a camping permission that you can get from the AXS Station.

It is pretty easy to get the camping permission. All you have to do is just apply yourself in the nearest AXS Station, or you can just apply online via AXS application on your smartphone. But keep in mind that not all permission from AXS Station is applied for all camping places in Singapore because some places have their own policy that you need to know before you decide to go.

To get the camping permission, you have to be either Singaporeans or permanent residents. If you are from outside Singapore, you need to have a residence permit to camp. This only applied in some camping places in Singapore too.

We recommend that you have to get the camping permission at least a week, or the maximum three days, prior to your camping day.

Now, are you ready to go camping in Singapore? Pick a weekend or a public holiday in Singapore that you want to spend by camping with your favorite people and pick a camping place that you want.

1. West Coast Park

The West Coast Park is a place for families. They said that this park is a “Play Centre in The West”. You can definitely plan your camping in Singapore in the West Coast Park. Bring your children and even the elderly as they will all enjoy the air and the view in West Coast Park. You don’t have to worry about taking the elderly here because West Coast Park is wheelchair friendly.

Don’t forget to get yourself a camping permit. Once you get it, you’ll be good to go. In this 50 hectares park, there are a lot of things to do while you go camping here. If you bring children, you can visit The Adventure Playground where there are eight playing sets that will get your children excited (well, not only children, even you will be excited too!).

If you bring your parents or grandparents here, you can take them to watch the birds. The birds are usually found in the Marsh Garden and most of them are the Striated Heron and the White-Breasted Waterhen. Take them to watch people fly some kites in the Grand Lawn area. Even better, bring your children or your little nieces and nephews and take some kites so you can all fly the kites together.

West Coast Park is divided into several areas, and the one that is recommended for camping in Singapore is Area 3. To make your camping more fun, you can have a barbecue session with your camping members. You can book the barbecue pit!

2. East Coast Park

Let’s move to the East Coast Park where you can find more interesting facilities and do more activities inside. Besides choosing it for your camping in Singapore plan, East Coast Park is also a nice place for a short getaway with friends and families.

Chill yourself and enjoy the open air under the coconut palms. Build your tent in area D or area G before you carry on your day with other activities in East Coast Park. As the previous park, this one is also a place for everyone. Children will be happy here while adults can relieve the stress.

Don’t forget to wake up early in the morning while you camp and catch the beautiful sunrise. You can continue your day by having a jog or riding a bike, if you bring one. Another great idea: you can bring along your pets as they will have fun too!

Other than biking (and skating, if you can), you can bring your children to play at the Children’s Playground located at the Marine Cove. We’re sure that the children will be very glad once they see the colorful playground from afar. Or, you can visit Nature Playgarden at the Raintree Cove. You will find some adventurous features like a climbing log (with the height that is 1.5 m) or a sand pit. The children will be free to move, climb, and jump! It’s a unique part of the East Coast Park that you should not miss when you camp there.

How about activities for adults? Well, don’t you worry since adults can do more activities than children. You can engage in sport activities like biking, skating, and even volleyball. If you love fishing, you can do it too in East Coast Park.

The difference between the East Coast Park and the West Coast Park is that the East has some restaurants around so you can easily stroll to get some food. Well, camping doesn’t always mean you have to cook dinner on your own, even though the option for barbecuing is available. The same with the previous park, you can also book the barbecue pit if you’re not interested in the restaurants and cafes around you.

3. Pasir Ris Park

The next place to spend your camping in Singapore is Pasir Ris Park. Now, be ready to feel the peace of walking in a park full with the beautiful Mangrove Trees. Take a walk at the boardwalk to get closer with the Mangroves and taste the tranquility that it makes.

Pasir Ris Park is a friendly place for families, just like other parks in Singapore. Other than the Mangrove Trees, another star of Pasir Ris Park is the Bird Watching Tower. Like the name, the three-storey tower is for bird watching, even though photographers can come as well to capture the beauty and the behavior of the birds. Photographers can stand by and wait for the planes to cross the sky.

But let’s forget about all those great features of Pasir Ris Park. Let’s go back to your camping in Singapore plan. You can build your tent in Area 1 and Area 3. Although you are camping, you don’t have to worry about where to take a bath or pee because there are the facilities of toilets and outdoor showers, just like in the previous two parks we already mentioned before. Thus, it won’t be like if you are camping in the middle of the jungle.

As usual, the park is the best place for children, including this one. So many features for children are available in Pasir Ris Park, such as the Nature Playgarden that is located in Area 1. The Nature Playgarden is divided into several zones that are the Sea Zone, Shore Zone, Village Square Zone and Village Settlement Zone.

The most interesting activity in Pasir Ris Park for children is the pony rides! If you want to take your children to try pony riding, pay attention that there might be a schedule for the riding. You need to buy the ticket too, but no worries, it is very cheap. At some point, pony rides might not be available, like if the weather is too hot or too wet.

Now, care to try Water Sports? Yes, in Pasir Ris Park, you can try Water Sports as it is close to the beach. Or, if you are not into water, you can consider biking and inline skating while enjoying the beautiful view around the Pasir Ris Park.

Last but not least, we recommend you to browse for some good food from the restaurants that are available by the beach. Walk at night to get some dinner… and some good views as well! But, of course, if you are more interested in having your own barbecue, it’s still a great idea too.

4. Pulau Ubin

If you want a real camping in Singapore experience, you can head to Pulau Ubin. If you don’t know yet, you can go to Changi Point Ferry Terminal from the city, then ride a boat. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Pulau Ubin from Singapore by boat. Don’t forget to pay for the boat and check the boat schedule. The maximum capacity of the boat is 12 people.

Pulau Ubin is a place where you can find the last kampongs of Singapore. So much different than camping in the park, camping in Pulau Ubin means you are in the middle of the wildlife. We recommend you to do your camping in Singapore plan in Pulau Ubin if you are really a nature lover. Prepare your best camping equipment and off you go!

There are several campsites in Pulau Ubin: Jelutong campsite, Mamam campsite, and Endut Senin campsite. Before you camp here, make sure you already applied yourself for camping permits from the AXS System. You should make sure that you apply for the permit 2 weeks before you go.

When you camp in Pulau Ubin, there are so many things that you can do, including visiting the Chek Jawa. In Chek Jawa, you can see the ecosystem directly and find the biscuit sea star or the peacock anemone.

Even though you are in the wild, you can still find toilet facilities in Pulau Ubin. Unfortunately, there is no shower available, unlike in the city’s parks. Thus, if taking a shower is very essential for you, you need to prepare for some alternatives.

5. Pulau Hantu

In Bahasa or Malay, Pulau Hantu means “Ghost Island”. But, don’t be afraid! It’s not scary at all! The name of Pulau Hantu has something to do with the history of the island, when the Malay warriors were dead during a battle on this island.

You can plan your camping in Singapore here. To get to Pulau Hantu is actually very easy. You can take a bus or a taxi. If you want to ride the bus, you can go to VivoCity first then continue to Pulau Hantu with the bus. Riding a ferry will be faster, though.

Pulau Hantu is a very beautiful island consist of 2 islets: Hantu Kecil and Hantu Besar. Both of them are the areas where you can build your tent and camp. Toilet facilities are available even though it is recommended for you to prepare your own water to clean yourself.

There are so many things you can do in Pulau Hantu when you camp there, starting from snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing and coral reefs. Thus, staying here will be suitable for those of you that love the marine world. Be prepared to see marine life, such as the anemone shrimp, sea turtles, clownfish, and angelfish.
