City life is often hectic and there are days we catch ourselves longing for some peace and quiet. Thankfully, you don’t have to travel very far to find that. Sleepy little Perlis offers plenty of that charm. The northernmost state of Malaysia is close to Langkawi but is often overlooked. Here, we have a useful guide to help you plan your visit to this delightful destination!

Things to do

Visit the paddy fields

Left, right, and everywhere else you look, the stunning paddy fields of Perlis catches the eye. It makes for a pleasing respite from the city’s towering skyscrapers and noisy vehicles trundling everywhere. Typically, the paddies are planted after the rainy season, which means the best time for you to visit is March to mid May and September to mid November.

Go for an adventure in Gua Kelam

Gua Kelam is the most popular cave in Perlis and is located about 25 minutes drive from Kangar. There is only one path to the cave, by means of an 8-foot-wide suspension bridge (those afraid of heights beware!) Once inside, you have nothing to worry about as the interior is well lit and there is a proper pathway for you to navigate through the cave. Keep your eyes peeled for remnants of the former tin mining operation, curious little bats, and an array of limestone formations.

Hike to Gua Sami

Also known as Gua Cenderawasih, this popular hiking spot offers stunning views from the top. Rumor has it that monks used to meditate in the cave, hence the name Gua Sami. The hike is a fairly easy one as it is all steps and not a jungle trail. One thing you should take note of is that the steps are pretty steep. Expect to see shades of green and gold when you look down - truly a visual feast.

Check out Tasik Melati

This natural wetland located within a development area is known for its lakes and recreational facilities. With its many pretty gazebos and bridges, it also makes for a very instagrammable spot. The water here never dries up as local farmers use it as an irrigation system. There are over 150 sandbars scattered throughout the lake, and visitors can easily stroll through by means of a footway.
