We are so glad we stayed here! Staff were just so sweet &very helpful when it came to questions about our plans for the days (helped we know some Japanese as their English is limited). The facade is tiny, so easy to miss, but discovered this inn is much bigger than it appears when we took the lift to our AMAZING trad Japanese breakfast! We booked a family room- 2 adults, 2 teens). Weren't expecting much coz Japanese rooms are notoriously small. We were shown a room with a dining table (with tea& snacks) which we assumed would convert to a bedroom. Our host opened sliding doors (thought it was a cupboard &he was showing us our futons & how to convert the room) -he was actually opening doors into our HUGE main room with futons already made up, TV, another (low) table and balcony area that led to the in-room toilet. Balcony windows slide open to enjoy the peaceful view of the courtyard garden. Toilet had a basin so you could brush teeth/get ready for the day in there but there was also a communal basin in the hall (normal at an inn as showers are in the communal bathhouse downstairs - we used the showers here but it was too hot to bathe!) Everything we could need was provided for in the bathhouse, and rooms had bottled water. Note: if you are over~5'9" careful of your head! This place was built over a century ago when people were smaller. We were warned but hubby still smacked his head! Also the stairs to this room are STEEP! We had to remove slippers to safely navigate the stairs

As mentioned in the other reviews, this is a traditional Ryokan. They don't speak much English and you need to respect their rules, but the staff is all very hospitable and gave us a good understanding of how traditional Japanese travel. At the same time, they had most of the amenities of a three-star hotel.

Checked in at 4 pm. Yet, I was able to leave my luggage at reception until 4 pm, and I appreciated that I can leave my luggage for an extra day without fee after checking out. The hotel didn't provide Internet from in-house but told us to use the city free public internet service which is slow and I wasn't able to log in and used.

This is a great place to stay in Kyoto for a traditional Japanese experience. I loved the room - it was like a dolls house with everything I needed and quite spacious. It was so quiet and cosy, I had the best sleep! The location was excellent a short walk to Gion district, markets and temples. The owners don't speak much english but you can get by. If you want a meal in the Ryokan you have to order the day before you arrive. If not there are plenty of places to eat nearby. I think it's perfect for a short stay and traditional experience. i would stay again.

Normal service, but that seems to be Kyoto standards, they don't like tourists too much there and I cannot blame them I guess. Staff speaks almost only Japanese, but is friendly and helpful. Check-in is late, check-out early. Early check-in is not possible. However, they do store your luggage in the meantime. Price quality wise I would next time opt for something else in Kyoto. But for the experience of a Ryokan on a budget it is ok. Otherwise spend some big bugs for the top end Ryokan.

Unfortunately we didn't get to stay here. There was a mix up in our booking date and when we arrived it was full. They weren't that welcoming, but we got to use the wifi in the lobby to find a new place to stay. The condition of the lobby wasn't very nice. No air con and no one was there to welcome us.

Staff were so lovely, rooms were fine with air conditioning which made it more appealing. Only fault however I understand it's a small family business was that there was a curfew between 11pm-12 am which made us feel uncomfortable retuning that late as staff were waiting up for us so they could lock up. Being in a new country and city for the first time we wanted to go exploring late at night for total expletive however kept looking at the clock so we would not get back so late. Other the that would re commend

We actually didn't get to stay here because there was a mix up in our reservation dates and they ended up being full. Upon walking in there was no one in the lobby to welcome us and no aircon on. It is warm these days so it made the hotel seem like it wasn't really prioritizing welcoming the guests properly. Overall, the place is a 3 star hotel type of vibe. The rooms were full booked but we got to check it out. We ended up going down the street and found a place that also gave free tea and coffee which is a good touch. Similar traditional style. For the price though this hotel is slightly cheaper.

The hotel locked us out after we went out in the evening. At no point did they state that they lock the front door but they left a note on the door saying they will be back at 05:40. It was pouring with rain and we had decided to have dinner and then went to a club. If the hotel plans on locking guests out they should at least inform us in advance so we can make plans to be back in time.

This ryokan is located less than 10 minutes walking distance from the bustling Nishiki Market and other fun shopping streets, so it was a great choice in terms of access. I thought the staff was nice and polite, and they let us be, which I like. However, it was difficult to communicate due to the language barrier. We were not sure if there was any dinner included in our hotel price, or if we would have the option of purchasing upon check-in. We read different things about whether this ryokan has dinner on several sites, but there was no way to confirm until we got there. When we asked about it, they just kept saying, "no dinner, no dinner, eat outside," with no further explanation, so I was disappointed and frustrated. In the evening, we saw other guests leaving to get dinner too. For those who are obsessed with hygiene, they didn't seem to assign guests their own slippers (shoes are not allowed inside). A bunch of random identical slippers that everyone has previously worn just sit at the front. So when you enter, you take off your shoes, and then put on random slippers; when you leave, you take off the slippers and put on your shoes; when you return, you just have to wear a random pair of slippers. That made me so uncomfortable, and I feel like scrubbing my feet everytime I think about it. As for the rooms, they are large and you definitely get that traditional feel with the tatami mats, green tea set, and yukatas. I quite enjoyed it, and I appreciated the much needed A/C. I also like the large tub and the option of showering standing up or on a stool (like you would in an onsen). There is also a TV, and we watched J-pop concerts before we went to bed. :)

I would only stay in a ryokan if you could get the dinner experience, too. Otherwise, it is just a different room setup, and, for Americans, it is less comfortable.

Hübsch eingerichtetes Ryokan. Nette Leute.
