More than 100,000 memorial towers of people from all eras stand side by side, showing that Mt. Koya is Japan's number one sacred place.Japan's Buddhist shrine with 1200-year history[Daijō Garan]Daijō Garan is one of the two major sacred sites at Koyasan, along with Okunoin, built first by Kūkai (also known as Kōbō-Daishi) when he founded Koyasan. It is said to embody the mandala of esoteric Buddhism and is comprised of 19 halls, including the main hall, "Kon-dō," and the 48.5m "Nembutsu-dai-tō," considered a symbol of Koyasan.[Kongobu-ji Temple]The headquarters temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism on Mt. Koyasan. The overall religious affairs of Mt. Koyasan are conducted here, and the head priest of Mt. Koyasan Shingon is appointed as the head priest. It features many tourist attractions such as the largest rock garden in Japan, "Banryu-tei," and sliding door paintings from the Kano school.[Tokugawa Family Reidai]A representative building of the Edo period built in 1643 by the third shogun Iemitsu. The main enshrined deity is Niutsuhime Omikami, the younger sister of Amaterasu Omikami, who gave Kobo Daishi Kukai Mt. Koyasan.
