The Sarawak State Museum is the oldest museum in Borneo and was founded in 1888 and opened in 1891 in Kuching, Sarawak. The Sarawak Museum was established by Charles Brooke which was the Second Rajah in 1860 under the influence of the great naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace. They set up a temporary museum at the market place, along Gambier Street Kuching in 30th October 1886. Later a proper museum was built at its present site and opened to the public on 4th August 1891.The Sarawak Museum has one of the best collections in Southeast Asia. The old wing, opened in 1891, is designed in the style of a Normandy town-house. It contains an exceptional ethnographic collection, some good natural history displays and a section on the oil industry in Sarawak. The new wing across the footbridge is used for events and exhibitions In the Museum grounds where Aquarium, the Botanical Gardens and the Heroes’ Memorial take place. This museum has become a research centre in Borneo where Sarawak Museum Journals are published annually for the world since 1910.
