Pandeli has a long history as a legendary restaurant in Istanbul. It was first opened in Eminönü by a Greek immigrant, Pandeli Çobanoğlu, in 1901. This restaurant was temporarily closed down after the financial crisis in 2016. But now, it is back in business with its long time serving chef at the helm. Pandeli serves traditional Turkish food such as dolma or stuffed vegetable, eggplant salad, pilaki or beans cooked in a sauce made of tomato, olive oil, and other ingredients, and lakerda or a fermented bonito dish; as well as Greek dishes. For a start, try its signature dish: slow-cooked lamb on eggplant puree and eggplant pie. Located on the first floor of the Spice Bazaar, decorated with blue Iznik tiles with painted ceilings and chandeliers, Pandeli opens from noon until dusk, and no alcohol served.
