this is our 4th stay at Rothay and it remains one of our favourites in the lakes. in winter it’s great to cosy up after a long walk in the garden spa, and the rooms and ambience is really comfortable without any pretentious swagger for which some of the other hotels in the area would charge you £100 per night more. breakfast is good quality and staff are friendly and efficient

Good value and cosy room. Spa was closed, which was not shown on hotels.com booking. Service at breakfast was poor.

Comfortable nights sleep, the food was excellent, high quality ingredients and cooked beautifully. Only 2 things that where bit of issue was £10 a day parking at hotel, which was extra think for the money you pay to stay, it should be included. The hotel spa wasn’t working due to refurbishment but didn’t know about it until we arrived .

Whilst the hotel itself is nice. We weren't made to feel welcome on arrival the receptionist clearly didnt want to be there and put a sour note on our stay. The customer service as a whole was lacking. The bathroom wasn't maintained and felt unclean. Overall it is a shame as a nice location and could be brilliant however we wouldn't return.

We were upgraded to a better room so that was really nice. Room up on 2nd floor and without a lift just as well we could carry our own luggage. Room very comfortable, although we noticed that the bathroom radiator didn't work. Shower excellent. All very clean with nice tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast very good with a good variety of choices. We ate in the restaurant in the evening once. Food nicely prepared and served well. Our biggest gripe is having to pay to park in the hotel car park. This is the first time we've encountered this and were very surprised by this. Additionally they charge Service Charge on every drink or meal. It didn't matter to us, but we overheard a few complaints about this.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The spa facilities were a real highlight—so relaxing and luxurious. The food was absolutely superb, with a high-end dining experience that exceeded expectations. The location was perfect, offering easy access to nearby attractions. Overall, it was a really nice experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch stay.

On first impression, we started off not great as there was a mixup. If you bring a dog you MUST book a dog friendly room - not just let them know a few days before as they won’t let you bring your dog if a dog-friendly room isn’t free. They were willing to discuss which I appreciated but I still couldn’t bring my dog. The room I got, was the one above the kitchen, which meant between 8pm and 11pm I smelled cigarette smoke from staff and heard conversation outside. We reported this to manager and his first comment was to speak with staff. It didn’t work as it happened again the second night. My husband went downstairs to tell reception again and it finally stopped and didn’t continue the last day we were there. They offered a complimentary drink in our room, which was kind and thoughtful. So all in all - I appreciated the responsiveness after our pushing, but I think the staff need some training on courtesies regarding noise and smoke given the kitchen is below one guest room. Otherwise the amenities were very nice. Last comment. Go for the full English at breakfast for a substantive meal, otherwise the portions strangely give you ‘military rations’ vibes (I.e. bland handful of green peas atop dry toast with poached eggs - strange item?). Anyway - all in all favorite was the spa facilities and the location in Grasmere. Thanks for a pretty much pleasant experience.

Excellent hotel with great facilities, the free use of the spa was a bonus and perhaps needs to be highlighted a bit more? Dinner and breakfast were both excellent and super service. High recommended

We only stayed one night but found the hotel delightful. We had stayed before but it was approaching 20 years ago. It was good then, but has been improved with well appointed rooms and a new conservatory restaurant overlooking the gardens which are alongside the River Rothay. Dinner was excellent and breakfast was of a good standard too.

The ‘deluxe’ room was not what we expected. We had issues to be sorted from the minute we arrived in our room. Needed to ask for an extra table lamp in order to use the desk in a dark corner. Toilet was permanently flushing causing noise and wasting water. Television needed connecting properly so no television for our first evening. Bathroom was very grubby. Wash hand basin tap came off showering the whole bathroom. Noise during night sounding like a pump which disturbed our sleep. Finally, not impressed with breakfasts. Had to ask for bananas each day. Had to ask for honey. Choices were very limited.
