Gaya Baru Malam Selatan Train
Instead of calling this train Gaya Baru Malam Selatan, the locals simply name it GBMS. The railroad car of which former name is Limited Express (Limex) Gaja Baru is an economy-class train with PSO offering access from Pasar Senen Station (Jakarta) to Gubeng Station (Surabaya). True to its name which represents night, the Gaya Baru Malam Selatan leaves from Jakarta to Surabaya through the southern track when the sun already sets. The railcar belonging to the operational region of Jakarta 1 is the only one from economy-class which takes the route.
The distance between Surabaya and Jakarta lies about 825 km. The GBMS is able to travel with an average speed of 50 to 100 km per hour. To reach the final destination, it only takes less than 14 hours. The departure times are 12 p.m. from Surabaya Gubeng Station and 10:15 from Pasar Senen Station. Why the train is called “malam” that means night in Indonesia as it always arrives at the final stop both in Surabaya and Jakarta at night.
As the GBMS is an economy-class train with PSO, it comes with an array of great facilities including AC, TV, toilet, and 106 passenger’s seats. The leather seats arranged nicely in 3-2 style are facing each other – the passengers are free to adjust the sitting position. There are two electric sockets used in turn in every two rows. The passengers can order some food by calling the waiter or waitress (this service is available both in the passenger car and dining car). This supplementary amenity is charged about 104,000 IDR per person.

The History
Gaya Baru Malam Selatan began its operation on February 17th, 1975. Before officially becoming an economy-class train with PSO, the railroad car was capable of carrying people in a big number. The rail ticket used to be limitless and only cost 55,000 IDR. The fare was compatible with the provided service which was less convenient. In the beginning, Gaya Baru Malam Selatan only offered access from Surabaya Gubeng Station to Jakarta Kota Station, instead of Pasar Senen Station.
The Train Series
Gaya Baru Malam Selatan applied either locomotive CC201 or CC203. The series consists of a dining car, a diesel engine, a cargo car, and 8 passenger coaches accommodating up to 106 people. Therefore, the GBSM is able to load more than 800 people and 2,000 people in total per day. The southern track allows this train to pass panoramic, green areas mainly in Bumi Banyumas, Yogyakarta, and the city of Madiun.
