Sembrani Train

Sembrani Railway is an animal train service of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) for The Regional Operations 1 Jakarta that provides cross-city journeys for Jakarta-Surabaya. The express train, formerly known as KA Mutiara Oetara, specifically connects the two metropolitan cities through Jakarta’s Gambir Station and Surabaya’s Pasar Turi Station.

Every day, KA Sembrani is recorded carrying an average of 1600 passengers because the train has a capacity of 300-400 seats per passenger car. KA Sembrani serves intercity trips once a day, both for departure and arrival. KA Sembrani from Gambir Station will depart at 19:15 and is planned to arrive at Surabaya’s Pasar Turi Station at 05.43 the next day. Meanwhile, KA Sembrani from Surabaya’s Pasar Turi Station always departs at 17.50 and is planned to arrive at Jakarta’s Gambir Station at 04.15 the next day.

Traveling with KA Sembrani will cross the northern route of Java Island along 725 kilometers. The use of Locomotive CC206 as a towing, with a speed of 100-120 km per hour, makes the average duration of the Sembrani KA trip become 10.5 hours each way. As an Executive class train, of course, the number of Sembrani railway stops is small in order to reach the final destination quickly. Along the way, KA Sembrani will only stop at seven transit stations. The stations are Cirebon Station, Tegal Station, Pekalongan Station, Semarang Tawang Station, Cepu Station, Bojonegoro Station, and Lamongan Station.

Ticket prices for Sembrani KA are available at several levels. This prices’ variation adjusts to the subclass of the train or seating position, mileage, time of train ticket booking, and travel time of the train. For the main mileage between Surabaya-Jakarta (or vice versa), the Sembrani KA ticket price is available in the range of Rp 375,000-Rp485,000 per person. While for shorter distances (for example, Surabaya-Bojonegoro), the Sembrani railway ticket prices are of course offered cheaper, which is between Rp285.000-Rp365.000.

The origin of the name

The origin of the KA Sembrani name is derived from a folklore. Sembrani is a legend of the past that tells of a brave winged-horse. This Sembrani horse can fly around the sky. On the other hand, there is also a saga of the Javanese people who believed that the Sembrani horse was a means of transportation of royal officials in the past. The two stories have essentially inspired KA Sembrani in the same way, in the sense of the agility, the speed, and the prided strength.

The history of the train

PT KAI (Persero) launched KA Sembrani on October 1, 1995. This train is a renewal and innovation service of its predecessor trains. The precursor of this train has actually existed since the 1960s. The predecessor was named KA Moetiara Oetara which had been operated during 1964-1965 and 1974-1976. At the pause between 1965-1974, KA Moetiara Oetara was renamed Moetiara Noord. From 1980 until 1995, this predecessor train was renamed the North Pearl Train.

Railway series

KA Sembrani has a total length of twelve chariots. The circuit consists of a CC206 Locomotive, a luggage cart, eight mixed executive trains, one chariot, and one generator train. Occasionally, KA Sembrani adds a parcel of baggage in its series.
