Located in Semarang Operational Area IV, this station is one of the two main stations in Semarang City, apart from Semarang Tawang Station. This station serves executive, mixed, and some economy-class intercity trains on the northern route of Java Island.

Poncol Station is Semarang's main stopping point for economy and commuter passenger trains. Almost all freight trains across northern Java stop here, except for the ONS Parcel Train, which unloads and loads at Tawang Station. Poncol Station also serves as an alternative when Tawang Station is flooded.

1. Replacing Pendrian Steam Tram Station

Semarang Poncol is used as the final stop station for train trips coming from Cirebon Prujakan station. Semarang Poncol Station replaced Pendrian Station, which was a steam tram station. In 1921, this station began serving trains, coinciding with the inauguration of the SCS express train on the Cirebon-Semarang route.

During the war of independence, the position of Semarang Poncol Station became increasingly strategic.
