The Tanah Abang ERT Station was originally built by Staatsspoorwegen Westerlijnen on October, 1st, 1899. But the original building of this train station had been demolished. Then, it was replaced with a new one as you can see now.
This 2-story building was inaugurated in 1997 by the Minister of Transportation at that time. Now, it has become a new face. Moreover, the facilities and equipment are increasingly more complete, making it easier for passengers. They include a flight bridge and escalator.
Tanah Abang ERT Station is the second busiest train station in Jabodetabek after Manggarai station. Of course, it happens because this ERT station is a transit or ERT to different directions with 2 Commuter Line crossings.
Besides that, this ERT station is also very strategic where its location is close to the very popular Tanah Abang Market. It is important to know that before serving ERT, Tanah Abang train station served long-distance trains to inter-provincial cities in Java.
The location of this ERT station is close to the West Flood Canal, making it prone to flooding. On February 2nd, 2007, the flood hit this ERT station. Then, this accident disrupted the ERT route. A week later, the Economy Class Train 906 derailed when it was about to leave due to flooding.
At the end of October 2008, there were 3 coal train carriages that derailed at this ERT station due to the driver’s negligence. Then, flood inundated this ERT station again on January, 17th, 2013, causing train travel to be disrupted.
