Menggatal is situated in the region of Sabah. Manggatal is a Malaysian town and sub-district on the west coast of Sabah. It is an outskirt of the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, and is under the jurisdiction of Kota Kinabalu City Hall. With the expansion of Kota Kinabalu, Menggatal has been absorbed into the metropolitan area. Among the developments here include Universiti Malaysia Sabah and the huge retail development of 1Borneo Hypermall. Menggatal located along Jalan Tuaran, which is the main road leading north from Kota Kinabalu city centre. The name "Manggatal" derives from the Malay words "mangga" (mango) gatal, which means 'itch mangos'. During the World War II, Manggatal is also the base where the Kinabalu Guerillas led by Albert Kwok actively operating to fight the Japanese. Manggatal was originally populated by native Dusuns. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this native population was supplemented by Chinese migrants, most of them were Hakkas.

How to Get There

By Plane

There are non-stop flights to Kota Kinabalu provided by Malaysia Airlines, Air Asia and Malindo Air. From airport you may take taxi or drive to Menggatal where the journey takes 26 minutes’ drive from airport.

By Bus

If you travel from Kota Kinabalu you can take bus or minibus at Wawasan Bus Terminal located in the city center to reach Menggatal.

By Ferry

Visitors from Labuan, Indonesia and Philippines can arrive in Sabah by Sea. From Kota Kinabalu Ferry Terminal you can take taxi, uber or grab car to reach Menggatal.

Kokol Hill

If you want to get the best view of Mount Kinabalu and the view of Sunset together you may spend time at Kokol Hill for panoramic view of Kota Kinabalu on west and the magnificent Mount Kinabalu on the east. Kokol Hill sits on the Crocker Range. It is just located only 1 hour drive away from Kota Kinabalu City and 30 minutes’ drive from Menggatal Town. Kota Kinabalu City Mosque

The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is the second main mosque in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, after State Mosque in Sembulan. The mosque was officially opened on 2 February 2000 following a proclamation of the city status of Kota Kinabalu. The architectural design is based on the Nabawi Mosque, the second holiest site in Islam, in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The dome is blue and gold, inspired by similar Arabic architecture. The mosque is a common tourist destination and included in several tours and also a common destination for photographers.

Sabah State Museum was built in 1985, the Museum complex is sited where then British North Borneo Governor's Istana was once located. The Museum consists of the Main Building, Science and Education Centre, Heritage Village, Sabah Art Gallery and Museum of Islamic Civilization. There is a Heritage Village on the Museum grounds where you can enter and experience different types of traditional houses of the various indigenous groups of Sabah.
