Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town located in Larut, Matang and Selama district at Perak which is just about an hour to the north-west of Ipoh city. The Port Weld railway station was located at the centre of the town. The whole railway line was located from Kuala Sepetang to Taiping which was the first railway line in the Peninsular, Currently, the Port Weld railway signboard become the remains of the station and it has been dismantled and the ticketing booth has became a Chinese coffee shop. It was also a fishing village and the main jumping-off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community which specializes in fish breeding in cages. Kuala Sepetang has excellent seafoods and also well known for its mangrove swamp reserve park which is open to the public daily. It has a boardwalk built over the swamp for tourists and chalets in which tourists can rent to stay the night on the riverfront. The village is also very popular with its authentic curry mee and Baozi.
The community uses Malay with Perak and Penang accent to communicate with people in or out of Perak. They also converse in English, Chinese and Tamil language.
From Kuala Lumpur city centre, it usually takes around 3 hours to Kuala Sepetang via North South highway. There is also a road option besides this road such as Jalan Klang- Teluk Intan which will take another hour and half to arrive to Kuala Sepetang. You can also reach Kuala Sepetang via Penang bridge from Bayan Lepas airport to Kuala Sepetang which only take one hour and thirty minutes.
This sanctuary is situated 26 minutes away from Kerian town and 50 minutes away from Kuala Sepetang town. During the migration season between August and April every year, more than 200,000 migratory birds representing some 50 species are estimated to stop over at Matang Mangrove Forest and since then, it has been a sanctuary for the birds.The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary has won the "Best Tourist Attraction (Natural Attraction)" category during the Malaysia Tourism Awards, a prestigious award presented to agencies and organisations which contribute to the development of tourism in Malaysia. You can take the North-South Expressway south from Butterworth (Penang) for about 30 minutes and reach the town of Kuala Kurau and see the sign of the sanctuary.
The 40,000-hectare Matang Mangrove Forest was declared as a Permanent Forest Reserve in 1906 and today, it is recognized as the great mangrove ecosystem in the world located only 2 minutes from Kuala Sepetang town. The Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve has also been proven to act as a natural barrier against tsunamis and acts as an important site for coastal migratory water birds and a portion of migrant forest birds. This mangrove reserve contains rich and diverse wildlife and also become the breeding grounds for numerous species of marine crustaceans including crabs, shrimps, lobsters, horseshoe crabs and prawns as well as fishes and shellfishes and approximately 43,000 to 85,000 birds can be seen during the migration. According to some ornithologists, there is a small population of Great Argus Pheasant (Argusianus argus), known locally by the Malays as Kuang that stays close to the ground and makes short flights to low hanging branches of the mangrove trees.
