Kudat is a town in Sabah, Malaysia. It is located in the north of Kota Kinabalu, which is the capital city of Sabah. Previously, Kudat was known as “Tomborungan” by the local people, who is the Rungus people. It is said that the local people had once mistakenly understood with the British people when they had thought that they were asking what the grass were and told the British, the name of the grass, which is ‘kutad’ in Rungus dialect. Soon after, Kudat had replaced Tomborungan and until now is known as Kudat.
Kudat is the town capital who functions as the administrator center of Kudat’s area which consists of Pitas, Kota Marudu and some beaches.
Kudat is located 190 kilometre from north Kota Kinabalu. On Kudat’s west, it is faced to the South China Sea and on the east Kudat, it is faced to Sulu Sea.
As Kudat was the first settlement by the Chinese Malaysians, the area is known to practice Hakka dialect. It is mostly used in the town area. Kudat also have another language spoken, which is the standard Dusun and Malay language as it is used by the Rungus people, one of the ethnic group in Borneo.
There are flights being offered by MAS which will directly land on the Kudat Airport. However, the airport only serves domestic flights from Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu. There are international flights offered to Kota Kinabalu International Airport from MAS and AirAsia. From the airport, the travellers then can take up taxi or bus services to go to Kudat. The journey will take up to 2 hours and 51 minutes to get to Kudat from Kota Kinabalu.
You can drive to Kudat from Kota Kinabalu. The journey is 190 kilometres long and the time will take approximately 3 hours of driving to Kudat. You can take the Pan-Borneo Highway which will take you straight to Kudat.
As Kudat is located at the north region of Borneo, you should go to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau as it is Northenmost Tip of Borneo, which is the meeting point between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea. This place is known to have the most beautiful scenery in Sabah.
A must-go place in Kudat also is Meranjak Longhouse which offers homestay programme for visitors to experience the real interesting life of the longhouse community.
The locals too have night market which usually held at Panggong Star Kudat. This place offers locals cuisines and goods being sold for daily routine’s needs at easy prices.
When in Kudat, it is a must to enjoy seafood where they sell seafood in cheaper price rather than in Peninsular Malaysia. Since the Hakka and Rungus people are the majority here, the cuisines offered in Kudat will have the influence of Chinese, Malay and Dusun’s flavour. Be sure to try it when you are here.
