Setiu is a district in Terengganu with a population of 55,517 inhabitants in 2010. This district is bordered by Besut to the north, Hulu Terengganu to the west, and on the south, Kuala Nerus. The administrative seat and commercial center of Setiu District is Bandar Permaisuri which is located in the center of the district. The district gets its name after a Bugis warrior with the same name. Majority of the inhabitants of Setiu are ethnic Malays, with remainder from the minority Chinese and Indian communities. Most Malays in Setiu speaks Kelantan-Pattani Malay but those that live near with Kuala Nerus speak Terengganu Malay.
From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, you can take flight such as Malaysia Airlines or Air Asia to Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu. From there, you can take a taxi or bus to the district which will take 1 hour and 4 minutes’ drive away.
The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Setiu covers a distance of 483 km or 4 hour 55 minutes’ drive away via the East Coast Expressway. You can see the panoramic views of the countryside along your journey.
You also can reach Setiu by bus. From the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) Kuala Lumpur, you can board the Mutiara Express line directly to the Setiu terminal located within the Bandar Permaisuri.
Setiu Wetland is one of the prime tourist destinations in Setiu that you shouldn’t miss. The Setiu Wetlands consists of three river basins converged to form a continuous lagoon 14 km long. It is the only wetland in Malaysia with nine interconnected ecosystems that includes the sea, beach, mudflat, lagoon, estuary, river, islands, coastal forest and mangrove forest.
Penarik Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Setiu that you can visit with a serene and breathtakingly beautiful. From the shore, you can see Bidong and Redang Islands, which is a short boat ride away from the Merang Jetty. You may come across some fishermen either going out to sea or just returning with a boat full of their fresh catch.
You may visit Rhu Sepuluh Beach to witness the beautiful scenery of the beach. Rhu Sepuluh beach is a well-known due to the location which is alongside the road that connects both Kelantan and Terengganu. The beach is hardly affected by the aggressive development work and most parts are still preserved and the beauty is still maintained.
If you are looking for the nature, Tebu Mountain is an ideal place to visit. Mount Tebu is the highest peak in Terengganu with the height of about 1.039 meters above sea level. It is a unique peak shrouded in many tales and its mysteries. You can spend the whole day walking around the peak area and the hike up can be done in about 5-6 hours with the views of the South China Sea.
