Rantau Abang is a small village located around 80 kilometres south of Kuala Terengganu. Besides its beautiful sandy beach, it is also a place to watch the giant leatherback turtle to lay eggs between May and August. Over 10,000 of these turtles came to the beaches on Rantau Abang during 1950s and has decreased tremendously in recent years. The biggest reasons for the decline have been poachers who take the turtle eggs and sell them in local villages, as turtle egg is one of the local’s delicacies. In addition, sea pollution and fishing practices made the declining even worse. As this case becomes more serious, the Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre has been established in Rantau Abang to act as sanctuary and conservation for nurturing remaining turtles. Besides that, the beaches are safe for swimming except some are restricted by the Fisheries Department for turtle conservation purposes. The beach offers many beach activities such as beach volleyball, picnic, kite flying and camping. There are some chalets that offer accommodation for visitors who want to spend a night or two.
