Tioman Island is a mukim and an island in Rompin District, Pahang. It is located 32 kilometres off the east coast of the state, 20 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide. It has eight main villages, the largest and most populous being Kampung Tekek in the north. The island is part of Pahang territory, although it is geographically closer to mainland Johor than to mainland Pahang, and is accessed via ferry service from the Johor coastal town of Mersing. Tioman Island is a small island and is a very famous spot for tourists to explore providing all the nature and splendid water it has to offer. The island is surrounded by a lot of marine life and is popular among people who love to snorkel and scuba dive. The Island is covered in tropical rainforests, home to butterflies, lizards and monkeys.
Most visitors arrive by ferry from Mersing on the mainland. Bluewater Express operates the ferry services and its boats are fast and comfortable taking approximately 2 hours to the first jetty in Kampong Genting. There are three services per day in each direction but sometimes only two services during weekdays but tidal issues or lack of passengers may cause cancellation. Some ferries also depart from Tanjung Gemuk which is the main gateway to Tioman Island from Pahang.
It is possible to book a private boat from Mersing, which is independent of the tide. The Ride costs RM 1300 one way and only departs if enough passengers are found, willing to put together that amount.
Mersing is a gateway to Tioman Island as you can catch a ferry to Tioman from Mersing. You can take a bus to Mersing and book a bus ticket to Mersing from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore online to get 10% discount on your online booking.
Tekek is located on the main shore and is easily accessible by boat or ferry ride from Mersing. Due to its central location, there is no trouble finding it. The place is much commercialized and offers great snorkelling and diving packages. Tekek is the main village in Tioman that has many diving centres for tourists. Asah Waterfall or mostly known as Mukut waterfall is one of the best waterfalls in the Tioman island and is something that every tourist should visit. The Asah Waterfall is nearly located in the village Mukut, so you can spend time with the local population, which is very friendly and get to taste some of the local delicacies. You can hear the beautiful rainforest birds calling, the green nature and occasionally sees monkeys and other animals making way casually.
You can visit Juara Beach as one of the best beaches in Tioman Island during your stay in the islands. This beach is famous for its uniqueness and the surroundings of the beach are covered with dense green forest on a pure white sand with crystal clear water of the beach that makes it unique from other beaches of Tioman Island. You can enjoy the scenery of real fruit trees like papaya, banana and mango trees in bulk and enjoy diving, snorkelling and canoeing activities.
Air Batang Village or ABC Village is centrally located in Tioman, just north of Tekek Village. Locally known as ABC, the beach is particularly beautiful with soft white sands and crystal clear water. You can go for a snorkelling excursion at ABC's Coral Bayor Monkey Beach, enjoy the sunset and shop varieties of gifts and souvenirs since they have a lot of souvenir shops.
Juara Turtle Hatchery is also a place you need to visit during your stay in Tioman Island. The turtle hatchery has a wide range of species and turtle eggs that you can see. The exploration of different species of turtles is among the best things to do in Tioman Island.
