Gelang Patah is a town in the state of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The name came from a tale where a queen came to the area on a boat and her bracelet fell into the sea. It was told her cry was very loud that the jelly fish heard it and brought her the bracelet. However when she was about to take it, the bracelet broke. She then named the place as Gelang Patah that literally translates to โbroken braceletโ.
Gelang Patah is famous due to the dish called โotak โ otak Gelang Patahโ. Moreover it is also taking its place on the map due to the Malaysia-Singapore connecting bridge.
Gelang Patah is in the south part of Malaysia. All of the populations speak Bahasa Melayu. It does not have a specific dialect spoken by them however they may have an influence of dialect from the state of Melaka or Selangor.
One of the closest airports would be the Changi Airport in Singapore. It is 43.8 kilometers away. One can land there from anywhere as it is an international airport. Then one may take a bus and head to Gelang Patah Bus Terminal.

Otak โ otak is a dish that comprises of shredded fish flesh with a lot of spice and then burnt on banana leaf. Gelang Patah specializes in this dish and many head here to get a taste of it. Besides that, Gelang Patah is also famous for the seafood found here. People from Singapore also come here to have some of the many seafood sold here.
Since Gelang Patah has a bridge that connects Malaysia and Singapore, perhaps it may not be such a bad idea to bring along your passport and take a drive to the neighboring country. The bridge is only 44 kilometers long. Therefore one can definitely go to Singapore in the morning and return later in the day. It is no wonder that even the Singaporeans are coming to Gelang Patah to enjoy some of the local dishes.
