Black Sand Beach is the English translation for Pantai Pasir Hitam. The beach is famous for its blackish sand and it is surely not from the volcanic eruption. There are so many myths spread about the colour of the sand but the most popular one is about a giant eagle named Garuda. Garuda was once seeking for some favours from the China Princess. But, her fiancé envied Garuda thus lodged a war. The beach sand reflects the remains of the fierce war and that was why it looks black. Some people say that the black sand is the effect of pigmentation by the iron oxide buried in the sand. However, the truth is, there exists huge amount of minerals called Tourmaline and Ilmenite in the granites of Gunung Raya. These minerals are run down by the spring water from the mountain and cause the color of sand to turn black.
