The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 to care for wild animals which have either been found injured in the forest, orphaned or were previously kept as illegal pets. The centre is within the Semenggoh Nature Reserve, located approximately 24km from Kuching town. The centre has been caring for almost 1,000 endangered mammals, birds and reptiles from dozens of different species. However, it is the orang utan rehabilitation programme that has made the centre famous. As a result, the Semenggoh Nature Reserve is nowadays a centre for the study of orang utan biology and behaviour.
A visit to Semenggoh Nature Reserve is a chance to see semi wild orang utans, ranging from tiny infants to mature adults in a secure natural habitat.
The best time to visit the Semenggoh Nature Reserve is during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions. The feeding takes place between 9.00 to 10.00 am and between 3.00 to 3.30 pm daily. During these times, the orang utans will descend from the forest canopy to the lower branches of trees nearby the feeding platform.
Visitors to the Semenggoh Nature Reserve may take the Sarawak Transport Company bus No. 6 from Kuching town. It will stops outside the main gate and further 20 minutes walking will bring the visitors to the Wildlife Centre. Visitors may also hail a taxi from Kuching town or ask for a guided tours package.
