Situated near Manila, Antipolo offers a sweet escape from the hustle and bustle of the metro. It has become a popular tourist destination especially for yuppies who just wanted to have a break from the monotony of daily living. Not so far away from the noises and busyness of Manila, but far enough to experience tranquility.
A popular pilgrimage site, Antipolo is the largest city in the CALABARZON region and one of the most populous cities in the country. It derived its name from tipolo (tree) which was in abundance in the area. Being the only city in the province of Rizal, Antipolo provides a balance of nature and structure. It welcomes everyone who wishes to find a home away from home, a sanctuary in the midst of the city.
Fly to Manila and drive eastward up to the mountains of Rizal.
The entry point is either through the ports of Batangas or Manila. From there, you can take the public transport or drive all the way to Antipolo. It’s going to be a long ride but it’s definitely worth it!
Jeepney terminals are located in Crossing, Mandaluyong, and in Cubao, Quezon City. You may also ride the UV Express from SM Megamall, Ayala, or Robinson’s Galleria. If you want to experience different public transports, you can take the LRT2, alight at Santolan station, and ride the jeepney to Antipolo.
When driving, you can choose to take the Ortigas Avenue route or a more complicated, but more scenic, Marcos Highway-Sumulong Highway route.
Exploring the city proper can be done on foot. Just get inspiration from people who do the annual Alay Lakad (walkathon from their respective places to Antipolo Cathedral). You can also grab a bicycle and pedal your way around. You can also hire a tricycle to take you to must-see places and must-try activities.
Known as the “Pilgrimage Capital of the Philippines,” Antipolo is home to many retreat houses, seminaries, convents, and beautiful churches. A favorite destination especially during Holy Week is the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (also known as the Antipolo Cathedral). Also growing in popularity since its appearance in a local movie is the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church near Hinulugang Taktak. The church has become a preferred wedding location by most couples and even singles who also wish to get married soon.
Then there’s Pinto Art Museum, which is a haven for lovers of art and nature. You only need to pay Php150 to be able to enjoy the picturesque home of a wide variety of arts. The galleries are well-organized and you will say nothing but “wow” at every exhibit on display. They have such an exquisite collection. The sunset and the overlooking view of Manila is also a sight to behold!
Bring your team to Phillip’s Sanctuary and come out stronger, more united, more excited to work with each other. Challenge your friends from the biking club and work your muscles out all the way to Boso Boso Highlands Resort.
Catch the sunset in one of the overlooking bars along Sumulong Highway. Book a room at Seven Suites Hotel Observatory and stargaze with your significant other. Discover the mysteries of the Mystical Cave and why the place is called Puting Bato.
Have a relaxing weekend at Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa. Reconnect with yourself through a personal silent retreat at Touch of Glory Prayer Mountain.
Antipolo is known for delicacies, so make sure to bring home suman (rice cake) and kasuy (cashew nuts). If you’re at Pinto Art Museum, might as well try their delicious offerings at the Pinto Art Gallery Café. For creatives who want to experience more, then you must visit Crescent Moon Café and Studio Pottery and make you sure you won’t miss their signature suman-mango dessert. Café Lupe is also a go-to place of tourists and residents alike. Not only does it serve good food but also a good view of the city.
You can find the perfect spots for nightlife in the east side along Sumulong Highway. You can never go wrong with Padi’s Point or if you’re up for the challenge of taking a literally long and winding road, then head over to Cloud 9. The best is always at the top, right?
There’s a bounty of hotels and resorts where you can rest and recharge. Mi Terraza Resort is an underrated getaway spot. You can also bring the whole family to Loreland Farm Resort where you can not only have a restful sleep, but can also wake up to a lot of possible adventures.
