San Juan in the province of Batangas is known for Laiya Beach, a popular tourist destination with white sands and clear water. It’s also famous for the Mainit Hot Spring, filled with healing minerals that relieve sore muscles and other physical ailments. Just around two-and-a-half hours away from Manila, it’s a great weekend destination for the family.
From Manila, take the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the STAR Tollway to San Jose – Ibaan – Batangas Rd. Make your exit at San Jose/Ibaan and find your way to Rosario-Ibaan Road, then to Rosario-San Juan-Candelaria Road, and finally to Laiya Road.
Tricycles are the main mode of transportation, if you’re bringing a car, commuting won’t be a problem.
Laiya Beach and its surrounding resorts are often the main tourist attractions in San Juan. With its pearly-white sand and crystal clear waters, it’s often an excellent substitute to Boracay.
However, Laiya is not the only destination to visit in San Juan. The municipality’s rich architectural heritage is also a tourist magnet. Make three wishes at the Parish of San Juan de Nepomuceno, a 19th century church which still stands today. There are also several heritage houses around the area.
Thrill-seekers can venture off to Mt. Daguldol-Lobo, a camper’s haven which is also a home for endemic species of birds and plants, or hike to Naambon Falls with pools of water at the base.
San Juan, Batangas is filled with natural wonders open to the public, so hiking or mountaineering is a main activity here. Swimming in Laiya is also sought after, especially during summer. Other nature-related activities include bird-watching, and watching sea turtles hatch from their eggs (no touching though).
Most restaurants belong to hotels and resorts, but are open to non-guests. San Juan shares varied versions of well-known Batangueño dishes, such as Loming Batangas, Tawilis, and Bulalo.
Small-time restaurants and bars are open late in the evening to cater to casual drinkers looking for cheap booze. Make your way to Papawill Restaurant or Old San Juan Hotel & Restaurant for some good time with friends.
