First off, it is a classic SF icon of a hotel. (And the Fairmont across the street has rooms like the Mark since both hotels are 'seniors' yet classic beautiful public areas). The IHG group purchased it in 1973 and even during the late 90s it was still well maintained and didn't show its age). However now, it is showing its age! The rooms are meh since they are clearly aging (and NOT in a super classic way) and are very dated. The place needs a renov! Would I stay there again? Probably not. But I would go to the Top of the Mark for a drink and view. (TIP: The $85.00 a night parking fee is outrageous--reserve and stay at any of the couple parking lots for $40 a night if you must drive into SF)

Very nice, we stayed in the Mark Hopkins Suite. The bathroom was immaculate. Some areas were roughly around the edges like the sun room or the parlor lacking a refrigerator that wasn’t filled with pay-for items. We enjoyed our stay.

Good location, great for value. Need better pillows and food too expensive at restsurant.

Lovely old, gracious hotel. Nice big rooms, professional and helpful staff. At the top of Nob Hill so a good cardio to get around but I would definitely return and recommend to friends.

We had a reservation for three nights, but our plans changed, so we wanted to modify it to two days. Unfortunately, the hotel didn’t comply with our request. Expedia assured us that they had contacted the hotel and would keep our room until our arrival. They also asked us to provide a proof from the hotel indicating when we checked in so that Expedia could refund us for the unused day. However, the front desk made a mistake by writing our check-in date incorrectly. When we informed them of this error, they refused to correct it. We requested a proof of the day we had access to our room, but they kept us waiting for an extended period. They took my email to send me later but they haven’t done it so far. Overall, this experience was very disappointing.

I give this hotel 4 stars because it’s a smaller hotel and less grand than the Fairmont and the rooms were not as grand as the Fairmont next door. However, staying at this smaller hotel means you get personal and quick service. The hotel is not swarming with hundreds of people like the Fairmont. It’s not a zoo inside and everybody and everything is so calm. The hotel staff was fantastic. The people were/are so kind and friendly. That’s what makes the difference. Our room was a decent size. The bed was the best hotel bed I’ve ever slept in. The pillows and sheets were good. The room was very quiet. Breakfast was included and it was good. Service is fast and attentive. The front desk reception was very friendly and kind and as that was our “first impression” of the hotel…we liked the hotel instantly. Our car was brought up quickly whenever we needed it and the valet guys were great. Housekeeping ladies were super sweet and friendly and very attentive. We had drinks at the Top of the Mark and the view was beautiful.

The service was fantastic and the room amenities were great - even if the room was a bit small for a king-sized bed. Not being familiar with SF, we didn't realize that walking anywhere from the hotel involved going down steep hills (and then back up again). This made the location a bit less than ideal for us.

Lovely location up on Nobb Hill with sweeping views of the city. The building is gracious with a huge amazing lobby and the front desk was very welcoming. It is an old hotel so just keep that in mind as far as room size. Double beds are hard to share but unfortunately there were not queens in the room.

This is our absolute favorite hotel, not only in San Francisco, but the US. We travel quite extensively and we cannot exclaim the virtues of this property enough! The property is immaculately clean, decorated beautifully and has maintained the charm of this historic hotel. EVERY employee from the front desk to housekeeping to restaurant staff to valet parking attendants are the best. The housekeeping staff thanked us for staying at the hotel. Judy, one of the concierges, spent a great deal of time with me on the phone prior to our arrival assisting me with making New Year’s Eve dinner reservations. The hotel has a water bottle refilling station. The beds are comfortable and the towels soft and fluffy. The showers are wonderful also.
