Located in Kedah itself, the mountain stands at the frontier of Kuala Muda and Yan districts. With the height of 3,854 feet (1,175 m), Mount Jerai (Malay: Gunung Jerai), formerly known as Kedah Peak. The mountain is a gigantic limestone outcrop and is a solitary characteristic from the surrounding geography of the area. There is an information board on top of the mountain stating that it used to be an island called Pulai Serai before the sea levels subsided letting it develops a mountain. Gunung Jerai plays a crucial role, from the historical point of view of this state. Indian and Arab merchants were already heading to the Merbok coastline at the foothill, even before the Malacca Sultanate became well known. Consequently, they traded and even made a life there. They built a complex of temples that have now been excavated and preserved at the Lembah Bujang Archeological Museum site, considering this place to be sacred. Current archeological findings revealed the existence of the "Temple of the Ninth Water Pool", that is believed to be Raja Bersiong's private pool, as legend has it that the 'king of fangs', once had his ancient kingdom within this vaccinity. This fair share of historical and mesmering folklore have made visitors continously come to this mountain.
