Back then, Penang was originally part of the sultanate of Kedah, then it was ceded to the British East India Company in 1786 by the Sultan of Kedah, in exchange for military protection from Siamese and Burmese armies who were threatening Kedah. On 11 August 1786, Captain Francis Light, known as the founder of Penang, raised the Union Jack and taking formal possession of Penang. He renamed it Prince of Wales Island (name used until after 1867) in honour of the heir to the British throne. Penang was the first British possession in the Malay States and Southeast Asia.

Georgetown is Penang’s capital city. Named after King George III, walking down the streets of Georgetown is like walking through the paths of history. As acknowledgment of its well-preserved cultural and historical heritage, the city was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on the 7th of July 2008. Beyond the old town, George Town is a modern city with skyscrapers and shopping malls.

Batu Ferringhi is located along the northern coast of Penang Island and about 11 km northwest of George Town. It is the prime beach destination in Penang among locals and tourists. It is also famous for its night market that offers a wide variety of merchandise and street food.

By BusFrom Kuala Lumpur, either TBS or Hentian Duta, take a bus to Butterworth or Georgetown.

Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera)Sited at 735 meter above sea level, Penang Hill can be reached either by cable car or hiking. You are advised to prepare phisically and mentally if you opt for hiking. The trails are going to take you into an adventurous journey. A perfect destination for recreational activities and photography, the hill is also an ideal honeymoon venue due to its idyllic setting. There are various types of flora and fauna as Penang Hill is a well preserved area. If you plan board the cable car, it takes 5 to 7 minutes to reach the top.

Tourists can also visit Georgetown city to explore more about Chinese as well as Muslim cultures as there are Chinese shop houses and mosques in that city. Batu Ferringhi night market where tourists can get local souvenirs to bring back home.

Penang is very famous for Nasi Kandar by the Mamak people. There are many famous restaurants serving delicious Nasi Kandar together with Kari Kepala Ikan (fish head curry). Other than that, Penang is also said to be the origin of Pasembor where there is a mixed of shrimp fritters, bean sprouts, beancurd and few more. Pasembor is dipped in peanut sauce for the best taste.

If you are going to ride cable car up to Penang Hill, make sure to come early especially during public or school holidays. The queue to get into the cable car can take you for hours.
